When Chen’s parents are incinerated before his eyes by a blast of ball lightning, he devotes his life to cracking the secret of the mysterious natural phenomenon. His search takes him to stormy mountaintops, an experimental military weapons lab, and an old Soviet science station. The more he learns, the more he comes to realize that ball lightning is just the tip of a new frontier in particle physics. Although Chen’s quest provides a purpose for his life, his reasons for chasing his elusive quarry come into conflict with soldiers and scientists who have motives of their own.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

These 11 stories, including five Chinese Galaxy Award winners, are a blazingly original ode to planet Earth, its pasts, and its futures. Liu's fiction takes the listener to the edge of the universe and the end of time, to meet stranger fates than we could have ever imagined. With a melancholic and keen understanding of human nature, Liu's stories show humanity's attempts to reason, navigate, and above all, survive in a desolate cosmos.

After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Twenty years ago, it was as if someone turned on a light. The future blazed into existence with each deliberate word that William Gibson laid down. The winner of Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Welcome to Ringworld, an intermediate step between Dyson Spheres and planets. The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per second means no need for a roof. tedious fantasy science?
There were many long stretches of fantasy-science, explained tediously. I listen to the audio a few times to be able to follow things i had missed. Wouldnt recommend for enjoyment, yet it did listen to it all the way through, so the story does keep you involved! And would buy and listen to the next book.

Soft-Scifi And Mystery Afoot!
I read this book in the span on two days. When I started I couldn’t stop. I also went in blind which is highly recommended.
Intrigue and mystery guide you through the plot. Several stories take place through several time periods and each one was genuinely interesting. There are occasional twists and turns which keep the reader engaged as well the big question, wtf is going on? Is everything connected or is this a series of events that unrelated yet important events?
My only hold back from 5 stars is that it can kind of drift. As I said, some things are seemingly unimportant, and while in the grand scheme they might actually be important, they don’t feel that way when reading them.
From my experience, most readers seem to gloss over the VR game that is brought up. It’s an interesting idea but you kind of get the point after a while and it begins to feel redundant.
Other than that, solid book, 4/5. I’d almost say a necessary read just so you can get to the true goal of reading The Dark Forest

An interesting premise that requires some patience
The plot takes a while before it coalesces. I had to step away from the book on more than one occasion only to return and plod on. It feels as though some of the cultural significances and nuances got lost in translation. The dialogue feels uterly clunky at times. Thankfully, the narration and the science pushed me to read on. I did not hesitate to buy The Dark Forest after I finished reading The Three-Body Problem.

incredible read!
randomly picked for my book club having known nothing about the book or the author I feel so foolish for that now. this was an incredible page turner and as a sci-fi fan the concepts explored and suggested here will not disappoint. I can see why this is getting a major development deal as it is one of the coolest takes on an invasion story I have ever read.

On of the best Sci-Fi series I have read
All around great series. Made me think and kept me interested most of the way through. Would recommend this to any sci-fi fan out there. The Chinese names made the characters a little hard to follow at first but that is a minor inconvenience. #Audible1

Weakest in the series, but a fantastic start
The three body problem kicks off my favorite sci-fi series of all time, though the pacing does struggle in places compared to the other books.
All in all it's a hearty recommendation, though this performance is also the weakest of the 3 books in the series, with certain characters being given unfitting personalities.
Wang Miao, the protagonist, is made out to be whinney in the recording, which is quite a far cry from the character I remember when reading the book.
Shi Qiang - "Da Shi" - Sounds like an angry meat heat, which also goes against his character, and the one presented in the subsequent book.
