Histoire
In the late nineteenth century, Charlotte Bell is growing up at Fayne, a vast and lonely estate straddling the border between England and Scotland, where she has been kept from the world by her adoring father, Lord Henry Bell, owing to a mysterious condition. Charlotte, strong and insatiably curious, revels in the moorlands, and has learned the treacherous and healing ways of the bog. When Charlotte’s appetite for learning threatens to exceed the bounds of the estate, her father breaks with tradition and hires a tutor to teach his daughter “as you would my son, had I one.”

Histoire
It is 1987, and a small Irish community is preparing for a wedding. The day before the ceremony, a group of young friends, including the bride and groom, are involved in an accident. Three survive. Three are killed. The lives of the families are shattered and the rifts between them ripple throughout the small town. Connor survived, but living among the angry and the mourning is almost as hard as carrying the shame of having been the driver. He leaves the only place he knows for another life, taking his secrets with him.

Histoire
Born in 1905, Daisy Goodwill Flett drifts through the chapters of childhood, marriage, widowhood, remarriage, motherhood, and old age, bewildered by her inability to understand her own role in the unsettled decades of the twentieth century. At last, reflecting on her unobserved and unconventional life, Daisy attempts to find a way to tell her story within a novel that is itself about the limitations of autobiography.

Description
Mary Rose MacKinnon is a successful author of YA fiction doing a tour of duty as stay-at-home mom while her partner Hilary takes a turn focusing on her career. She tries valiantly to balance the (mostly) solo parenting of two young children with the relentless needs of her aging parents. But amid the hilarities of full-on domesticity arises a sense of dread. Do others notice the dents in the expensive refrigerator? How long will it take Mary Rose to realize that the car alarm that has been going off all morning is hers, and how on earth did her sharpest pair of scissors wind up in her toddler's hands?
As frustrations mount, she experiences a flare-up of forgotten symptoms of a childhood illness that compel her to rethink her own upbringing and family history. Over the course of one outwardly ordinary week, Mary Rose's world threatens to unravel, and the specter of violence raises its head with dangerous implications for her and her children.
With humor and unerring emotional accuracy, Adult Onset explores the pleasures and pressures of family bonds, powerful and yet so easily twisted and broken. Ann-Marie MacDonald has crafted a searing, terrifying, yet ultimately uplifting story.

Ok
Narration was good as far as it having been the author. Story was ok but too much repetition and it was a downer.

So great, eh!
This book was made better by Ann-Marie reading it herself. Thoroughly so much Canada with our quirks and prepositions 🤪🤪

Such a treat hearing the author read it!
Ann-Marie MacDonald is a powerful fiction writer (and many other things). She is also an outstanding narrator, bringing to life the book’s different characters (and their idiosyncrasies), plus the multiple time periods. You can almost hear the different characters speaking!

Powerful and heartful!
When I first started it, I didn't think that I would like it, but boy was I wrong! I loved it. I loved the intricacies and details of the everyday, that we all notice, but somehow disregard as background noise. I loved that it served as a love story to life in Toronto, the Annex, and it's ever changing landscape. I was enthralled by the way she managed to capture the challenges of everyday parenting in different generations, while balancing and sorting the influence of how we have each been parented.
I was sad when it ended, as I'm going to miss M.R. ...
