FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016

This was to be her last day alive. The renowned criminal psychologist Ira Samin prepared her suicide thoroughly. The death of her eldest daughter had weighed too heavily on her conscience for her to carry on and she yearned for one last drink to raise a toast to oblivion. Her morbid plans are interrupted and she is called in to negotiate a gruesome hostage situation at a radio station where a psychopath is playing a morbid game.

While the show is on air, he calls people from the phonebook at random. If they pick up the phone with a certain slogan, a hostage is set free. If they don't, then the hostage is unceremoniously shot. The man threatens to continue playing this game until his fiancée arrives at the studio. The only problem is that his fiancée died several months ago....

AMOK is a gripping audiodrama and tense psychological hostage thriller set in a Berlin Radio Station, from the internationally renowned author of the best-selling Audible Original Drama The Child.

It could not be better. Don’t miss it.

The basic premise is that a gunman has highjacked a radio station and broadcast his death threats to Berlin, and ultimately all of Germany and then all of Europe. The assigned negotiator is highly skilled, but an alcoholic and dysfunctional. To reveal more of this intense, multi-layered but easy to follow plot would give too much away of this clever, suspenseful, wonderfully executed work. Nothing is as it initially seems, and as the plot unfolds unexpected and compelling realities come into view. One cannot predict the next revelation although it logically emerges from that which precedes it.

This is an audio drama in which the senes are presented by a skillful, highly qualified cast, linked by compelling and well executed narration and sound.

Adapted from a highly acclaimed German novel, the English vocabulary, grammar, syntax and nuance are perfect. It is refreshing that there is no sexuality explicit or sacrilegious language, proving again that an authentic book can be written without it.

This work qualifies as one of Audible’s very best productions.
