Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn't easy. Story
Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

Best book I've ever listened to!!

Publisher's Summary
Speaker, writer, and producer Trey Anthony breaks it down, giving Black women a relatable voice and personalized "keeping it real" to-do list on how to practice self-love and self-care.
Therapy is not just for White women - no matter what your momma told you!
After a lifetime of never truly relating to the personal-development experts because of the color of her skin, Trey Anthony has written the book she needed to read as a Black woman trying to navigate a world filled with unique challenges that often acts like she doesn't exist.
On the outside Trey Anthony was the overachieving, reliable, and strong Black woman she was raised to be, but on the inside the pressure of sacrificing her own needs to please others was building. When her grandmother and mother raised her strong, they also unknowingly taught her that self-love and expressing emotions were weak, creating an unhealthy dynamic that had Trey facing burnout and rock bottom.
In Black Girl in Love (with Herself), Trey breaks down the lessons and tools that she used to heal her life, including how to:
- Set clear and healthy boundaries - even with the people who raised you
- Quit being the family ATM
- Sort out who is a real friend and who is just there for parties and gossip
- Confront microaggressions at work without missing a beat
- Forget who Black women are "supposed" to be
- And fall in love with yourself!

Warts and All
Trey Anthony lays herself bare in this audiobook that makes the reader realize that they are not alone. She does not glamorize the process of becoming successful and tells the truth about the self doubt, anxiety and depression that is part of succeeding as a black woman for so many of us living in a white world. Her story is our story. Normalizing the mental health challenges black women face and how often we are the last to know what is happening to us. Trey is lucky to have a strong circle of friends and family to support her, not everyone does. And she shares how to be the support for others and how to love yourself with words of inspiration that make you want to jump up and run to the mirror to express your love for yourself. Thanks for doing this Trey. You make it possible for all us to face our pain without shame.

Literary food for your soul
Just finished listening to “Black Girl in Love (with herself)” by Trey Anthony and must say it was food to my soul. I enjoyed the audiobook and recommend you all buy it, as it touches on so many cultural issues we face as Black people, especially those from 🇯🇲 like myself. You will laugh, cry, write affirmations, call your parents, begin practicing more self love and believe in the power of forgiveness and resilience again. Thank you helping me start 2021 on the right Trey!

Real, Raw, Inspiring
I loved it. as a Black Woman I found so many of the things Trey talked about relatable from the family upbringing with discipline to having to feel like you're always strong because of the way Black Woman are perceived. The vulnerability chapter really got me.
