Story
A new beginning in charming Oceanside, Washington, is exactly what Hope Godwin needs after the death of her twin brother. There are plenty of distractions, like her cozy cottage with the slightly nosy landlords next door, and a brewing drama among her students at the local high school. Even having settled quickly into the community, Hope still feels something is still missing. That is, until her landlords convince her to volunteer at their animal shelter. There she meets Shadow, a rescue dog that everyone has given up on. But true to her name, Hope believes he’s worth saving.

Publisher's Summary
New York Times best-seller.
A seaside town helps one young woman reclaim the light after darkness in an uplifting novel from number-one New York Times best-selling author Debbie Macomber.
“Romantic, warm, and a breeze to read - one of Macomber’s best.” (Kirkus Reviews)
Annie Marlow has been through the worst. Rocked by tragedy, she heads to the one place that makes her happy: Oceanside in the Pacific Northwest, the destination of many family vacations when Annie was a teenager.
Once there, Annie begins to restore her broken spirit, thanks in part to the folks she meets: a local painter, Keaton, whose large frame is equal to his big heart - and who helps Annie fix up her rental cottage by the sea; Mellie, the reclusive, prickly landlord Annie is determined to befriend; and Britt, a teenager with a terrible secret. But it is Keaton to whom Annie feels most drawn. His quiet, peaceful nature offers her both comfort and reprieve from her grief, and the two begin to grow closer.
Then events threaten to undo the idyll Annie has come to enjoy. And when the opportunity of a lifetime lands in her lap, she is torn between the excitement of a new journey toward success and the safe and secure arms of the haven - and the man - she's come to call home.
In this heartwarming tale, Annie finds that the surest way to fix what is damaged within is to help others rise above their pain and find a way to heal.
Praise for Cottage by the Sea:
“Macomber never disappoints. Tears and laughter abound in this story of loss and healing that will wrap you up and pull you in; readers will finish it in one sitting.” (Library Journal, starred review)
“Macomber’s story of tragedy and triumph is emotionally engaging from the outset and ends with a satisfying conclusion. Readers will be most taken by the characters, particularly Annie, a heartwarming lead who bolsters the novel.” (Publishers Weekly)
What the critics say
"No one tugs at readers' heartstrings quite as effectively as Macomber." (Chicago Tribune)
"The reigning queen of women's fiction." (The Sacramento Bee)
"It’s impossible not to cheer for Macomber’s characters.... When it comes to creating a special place and memorable, honorable characters, nobody does it better than Macomber." (BookPage)

Don’t expect Cedar Cove
Disappointing characters and plot. Both main characters seemed completely unreal to me. With very little interaction, they suddenly came together. Except for another couple, and a young patient and her family, the hero and heroine seemed to exist in isolation. There was very little description of the town and other townspeople. I think it must have been a very early Debbie Macomber book. It had all the elements of a good story, but somehow it just didn’t come together and the book became ponderous and hard to finish.
The narration was extremely slow, adding to the plodding and heavy-handed character development and plot. In frustration, I listened to the book at 1.2, which even then was ponderous at times. It seemed like the narrator gave the characters little affect and energy. It’s certainly not the worst narration, but definitely lacked spark and liveliness.
I bought the book anticipating the enjoyment of a Cedar Cove novel, but seriously regretted using a credit on a book I could hardly finish.

I did not enjoy it
This book focus on two separate love stories at the expense of the main plot line taking a hit. There was barely any interaction between the main character and her love interest. I almost never give books a bad review but this one deserves the rating I gave.
