Story
In the nearly two years since Anthony Bourdain's death, no one else has come close to filling the void he left. His passion for and genuine curiosity about the people and cultures he visited made the world feel smaller and more connected. Despite his affable, confident, and trademark snarky TV persona, the real Tony was intensely private, deeply conflicted about his fame, and an enigma even to those close to him. Tony’s devoted crew knew him best, and no one else had a front-row seat for as long as his director and producer, Tom Vitale.

Publisher's Summary
The bestselling, “unvarnished” (The New York Times), “engrossing” (The Guardian), “gritty, well-researched” (The Economist)—and definitely unauthorized—biography of the celebrity chef and TV star Anthony Bourdain, based on extensive interviews with those who knew the real story.
Anthony Bourdain’s death by suicide in June 2018 shocked people around the world. Bourdain seemed to have it all: an irresistible personality, a dream job, a beautiful family, and international fame. The reality, though, was more complicated than it seemed.
Bourdain became a celebrity with his bestselling book Kitchen Confidential. He parlayed it into a series of hit television shows, including the Food Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations and CNN’s Parts Unknown. But his bad boy charisma belied a troubled spirit. Addiction and an obsession with perfection and personal integrity ruined two marriages and turned him into a boss from hell, even as millions of fans became enamored of the quick-witted and genuinely empathetic traveler they saw on TV. At the height of his success Bourdain was already running out of steam, physically and emotionally, when he fell hard for an Italian actress who could be even colder to him than he sometimes was to others, and who effectively drove a wedge between him and his young daughter.
Down and Out in Paradise is the first book to tell the full Bourdain story, and to show how Bourdain’s never-before-reported childhood traumas fueled both the creativity and insecurities that would lead him to a place of despair. “Filled with fresh, intimate details” (The New York Times), this is the real story behind an extraordinary life.

Definitely Read It!
This book is a little slow at times, and imho, has some irrelevant information and stories and that’s why I gave it 3 stars overall.

A bit of a glimpse
Liked it but seemed drawn out and frankly an attempt to grasp $$ and interest for one last hurrah! Not sure Bourdain would approve

At chapter 8, I don't think I will finish it.
How can you trust a book that manages to misquote a song lyrics published in 1967? Even from multiple live performances, Jim Morison never said: "This is the end, my brand new friend". How can you trust a book that misquotes Bourdain from a Parts Unknown episode? I was driving tonight and yelling in the car: that is not the correct lyrics to "The end," OR that is not what he said - I saw it, I heard it. He never says, "the first time I felt dope sick, I looked into the mirror and I smiled." Bourdain said: "I'll tell you something really shameful about myself. The first time I shot up I looked at myself in the mirror with a big grin." - Not the same intent in the statement. There is a considerable amount of time spent on uninteresting restaurant discussions, which makes me think the author had a few "good" (controversial) interviews and filled in the rest. Why do I care if one or two words are wrong? If you can't get this right, I can't trust you on things I didn't hear firsthand. Odds are - I am returning this. the author seems bent on taking Anthony and his family down a notch and blaming Asia Argento for his death. Is there a chapter on depression and how to help yourself out of toxic relationships? I don't know yet. I doubt it. He was 61 years old, and made his own decision. Was she good for him? No. But should she be blamed for the rest of her life for his suicide? I don't think so. Let the man rest in peace if you have nothing valuable to say. Once again, Eric Ripert proves to be a true friend and doesn't seem to have participated.

Waste of money
I am halfway through this book and its been a god awful uphill journey. It has very little information in it, inaccuracies and the writing style is garbage. It's absolutely packed with flowery overly dramatic language and is actually saying very little about Anthony himself. I'm going to see if it's returnable. This is just a hack trying to cash in on a dead man's legacy.
