Story
For over 20 years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mt. Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity.

A Wonderful Tale
This telling of the classic, twisting, interconnecting, supernatural "haunting" of a group of friends is exceptionally well done. The narrator is okay - better than many I've heard, but somewhat reminiscent of an old storyteller telling tales around a campfire. He had an easy pace, decent intonation, and strove to give the characters their own voice, which is MUCH appreciated. I suggest listening to the sample first to see if you are okay with the voice of the narrator...
The story is a straight masterpiece of chilling, creepy horror written in the classic style. I have the paperback and was very happy to find a recorded version to dive into when my hands were occupied. I thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish.

Well thought out and creepy.
This is one of the Straub books that has favorably weathered many years since its publication. It is a well-written, scary story that is enhanced by the complex plot and strong characters that I feel lovers of the horror genre will enjoy. My only complaint is the narration: Buck Schimer obviously tried his best but he should really be reading the nightly news and not narrating a novel.

Great book, but the narrator does every woman's voice in a tremulous manner that makes them sound like old biddies.
