The Klondike gold rush, which occurred between 1896 and 1899, was one of the strangest outbreaks of "gold fever" ever to take place. With news of California's rush still fresh in their minds, thousands of men with get-rich-quick dreams hurried to stake out claims in the Yukon. But they did not count on the murderous weather...or the severe mountain passes that protected the gold.

Story
Gripping and often poetic, Alone Against the North is a classic adventure story of single-minded obsession, physical hardship, and the restless sense of wonder that every explorer has in common. What Shoalts discovered as he paddled downriver was a series of unmapped waterfalls that could easily have killed him. Just as astonishing was the media reaction when he got back to civilization. He was feted by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and congratulated by the Governor General. People were enthralled by Shoalts’s proof that the world is bigger than we think.

Publisher's Summary
More than half a century ago, the naturalist Farley Mowat accepted an assignment to investigate why wolves were killing Arctic caribou. Mowat’s account of the summer he lived in the frozen tundra alone – studying the wolf population and developing a deep affection for these wild creatures (who were no threat to caribou or man) – is today celebrated as a classic of nature writing, at once a tale of remarkable adventure and an indelible record of the myths and magic of wolves. Never Cry Wolf was made into a major motion picture by Walt Disney Productions.

Fascinating story and wonderful prose
Farley Mowat has married scientific research with rich prose. The story brought vivid colour and dimension to what we consider a wasteland of cold, lifeless expanse. There are many characters, mostly with four legs (and names!), and each one sheds light on the mystery of the wolf and it’s northern environment.
Adam Sims buoyant narration kept the story light and entertaining. He was a great choice.
I only wish the book was longer. I don’t know if I want more research story, or more character story - both I guess!
I listened to this audiobook with my twelve year old son on a road trip and it melted the time away - he loved it.

Farley is a winner!
Story was awesome! The reader did a great job, but I can just imagine that Farley would have a dry time of voice that would be even more pleasing to the ear.

Great story for long summer roadtrips
I first had this book read out loud to me by my Grade 6 teacher. I remembered loving it and when my kids became interested in wolves after a visit to a wolf sanctuary, I bought this for us to listen to on the drive to the cottage. They loved it and I had forgotten how funny it was. Mowat is a great story teller and the narrator was quite good as well. I only wish more of Mowat's books were available (The Dog Who Wouldn't Be, would be a great start)

Beautiful, but sad
I’ve consumed this book, in some form, many times. More than I can count, likely. No matter how many times I read these stories, the ending still breaks my heart. But each time, also, I fall more and more in love with the wolves, and Mowat himself. This book started my love for wolves when my mum read it to me as a child, and has continued it through my life. Farley Mowat is one of my favourite authors, and is definitely my favourite Canadian author, and an added bonus for me is that he was born and raised very close to my Ontario childhood home. Absolutely wonderful story, and no matter how many times I read or listen, I still hope for a different ending.
