Publisher's Summary
An instant New York Times best seller
A Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club pick!
"Brave, fresh...unforgettable." (The New York Times Book Review)
"A celebration of girls who dare to dream." (Imbolo Mbue, author of Behold the Dreamers, an Oprah’s Book Club pick)
Shortlisted for the Desmond Elliot Prize and recommended by The New York Times, Marie Claire, Vogue, Essence, PopSugar, Daily Mail, Electric Literature, Red, Stylist, Daily Kos, Library Journal, The Everygirl, and Read It Forward!
The unforgettable, inspiring story of a teenage girl growing up in a rural Nigerian village who longs to get an education so that she can find her “louding voice” and speak up for herself, The Girl with the Louding Voice is a simultaneously heartbreaking and triumphant tale about the power of fighting for your dreams.
Despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her path, Adunni never loses sight of her goal of escaping the life of poverty she was born into so that she can build the future she chooses for herself - and help other girls like her do the same.
Her spirited determination to find joy and hope in even the most difficult circumstances imaginable will “break your heart and then put it back together again” (Jenna Bush Hager on The Today Show) even as Adunni shows us how one courageous young girl can inspire us all to reach for our dreams...and maybe even change the world.
What the critics say
"Adunni’s brave, fresh voice powerfully articulates a resounding anger toward Africa’s toxic patriarchy.... Daré draws the reader in with a vivid character whose dire circumstances are contrasted with her natural creativity (she keeps her spirits up by composing comic songs imagining a fabulous future) and her undying will to survive.... Throughout her harrowing coming-of-age journey, told with verve and compassion, Adunni never loses the ‘louding voice’ that makes Daré’s story, and her protagonist, so unforgettable.” (The New York Times Book Review)
"[A] compelling debut." (Ms. Magazine, "Feminist Books Coming out in 2020")
"A heart-warming, enlightening novel... Through the moving story of a girl’s persistent struggle to acquire an education, The Girl with the Louding Voice brings deep, significant issues into focus." (BookPage)

Adjoa's narration was fantastic.
I have found it hard in the past to read books where the main character speaks in broken English or when the characters have names I don't know how to pronounce. For this reason I decided to try the audio book and I'm so glad I did. The narrator was incredible and I truly enjoyed this beautifully woven story.

An inspiring story
I loved this book. It’s full of beautiful real characters. It has heart, anger, stupidity, meanness and hope. I loved Adonai and her spirit. The speaker did a wonderful job of differentiating the characters. There is much to learn here. 💗

Best audible book in my 15 year membership.
Abi Daré should have won all her nominations and more. This is a novel I hope many young women will listen to. And it should be listened to. Adjoa Andoh excellent performance contributes, immensely to the power of this masterpiece.

Best read of 2021
I am an avid reader and this book came up in my book club list. I decided to grab an audio version of it as there is lots of culturally true English which can make it hard to read. The audio version was amazing! This is a highly recommend from me! Dare did an amazing job of making her audience feel, see and hear the story.

Raw emotion
Plight of girls and women in Nigeria. But if voices are raised one by one there is hope. Gripping story. The narrator should get an Oscar. Wow. She brought the author's story to life.

An inspiring read about hope & belief
“Who knows what else tomorrow will bring? So, I nod my head yes, because it is true, the future is always working, always busy unfolding better things, and even if it doesn’t seem so sometimes, we have hope of it.”
I must point out that each year, an estimated 12 million girls aged under 18 marry against their will. This is just one story...
The Girl With the Lounding Voice is a book about hope and the fierceness of the human spirit.
I first came across this book at the beginning of the year when I was searching for books by African writers that would be coming out in 2020.
And although at the time it didn’t make my ‘Most Anticipated Books of 2020’ list, it truly should have, because it is a gem, it is real, it is sad, it is happy, it is beautiful.
This compelling debut by Abi Dare transported me into Adunni’s life, as I felt her joys and hardships.
The story begins with fourteen-year-old Adunni, a Nigerian girl who lives in a small home with her father and brothers, her month has passed away so naturally, she has taken over the household cleaning and cooking. Before she knows what is going on she’s sold into marriage as wife number three to a man older than her own father.
Her father, who’s concerned more about his well-being and paying the household bills, doesn’t think twice about selling his daughter into marriage, and even enjoys the richness that the sale affords him, right in front of her face.
Still, a virgin, Adunni’s new husband is focused on getting her pregnant, so that she can have a son for him and carry on the business and the family name since none of his other wives have been able to give him one.
Abused and mistreated by the first wife, Adunni runs away only to find herself a slave in a wealthy household suffering all forms of abuse. Despite the life she is given, Adunni is determined to live out her dreams of going to school and becoming a teacher one day. And her perseverance is what makes the story so compelling.
I loved this book. It was so well written and the themes of classism and sexism in Nigeria engulf the story and make you think about the millions of girls like Adunni that have no way out and very little options.

What a beautiful, touching story.
I can't imagine that anyone could listen to this book and not come away loving it and adoring Adunni. What a gem it is! And the narration is exquisite (fun fact: Ms Andoh plays Lady Danbury in Bridgerton. I had no idea even though I was watching the show in the same week as listening to the book :) ). It's an entirely satisfying and engrossing story, and I really hope Ms Dare has a second novel in the works! Highly, highly recommended!
