Publisher's Summary

Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

What the critics say

"Charles Portis is perhaps the most original, indescribable sui generis talent overlooked by literary culture in America." ( Esquire)
“Tom Wolfe, who worked with Portis as a reporter at the New York Herald-Tribune in the early 1960s called him – the original laconic cutup. A generation of novelists since then have simply regarded him as a writers-writer and have made his name a sort of secret password. Soon, they’ll no longer have him to themselves.” ( Rolling Stone Magazine)
“Like Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn and Thomas Berger’s Little Big Man, Charles Portis’s True Grit captures the nanve elegance of the American voice.” (Jonathan Lethem)

Great dialogue

The bickering between the characters was what made this good listen. The voices was great. The storey was fine. A regular storey you would expect in a western.

One of the greatest audiobooks I’ve encountered

This is a great book with truly spectacular narration. It’s a Western, written in the 1950s, but taking place in the 1870s. It is set in Arkansas and the narrator has a wonderful voice, which she switches up for the different characters and accents.

Awesome

If you liked the movie you will like this book. Just too bad narrator didn't add more emotion to the exciting parts. This is one of those stories you can listen to again.

A true American classic.

Donna Tartt's essay at the end says it all and should be made available in its' entirely as the sample preview for this book. Forget the movies, take a chance, read or listen to this story.

“People do not give it credence that a 14yr old girl could avenge her father’s blood”

Fantastic story and great narration! You could tell the narrator holds a lot of reverence towards this book and put her heart and soul into it. She did a mighty fine job, and as a bonus her accent was perfect for it too. This is one of those classic stories that everyone should read, it was that good! Listening to this audiobook made a recent road trip through the mountains even better. Super enjoyable experience.

Loved it! Great story and narrator.

Will listen to it many more times. Well done production. Why do I have to put so many words in a review?

Lead character/narrator was fantastic. Word requirements are very very very very very very annoying.

Entertaining Rendition. Awful Sound Quality.

I confess that I have never seen the beloved John Wayne-helmed Hollywood treatment of this story - but could easily see its popularity if it's faithful to the story. Charles Portis offers a story about a precocious headstrong 14-year-old Arkansas girl named 'Mattie Ross'.. brashly coercing and manipulating her way to teaming up with US Marshal "Rooster" Cogburn.. and getting revenge for her father's killing in the post-Civil War South. The pacing is great, the Old West shoot-'em-up action is well-scripted, the description is mind's-eye vivid, and the dialogue is truly stellar - Portis is a genuine wordsmith.

Also fortuitously for audiobook consumers: Donna Tartt turns in a pitch-perfect interpretation of the characters (including flawless Arkadian accents) and captures the author's intended tone brilliantly. Her performance is by no means flawless, but thoroughly enjoyable.
Less fortunately, the sound quality provided by Recorded Books Inc. is *Terrible*. Mouth sounds (is Tartt sucking on a cough drop?), loud breathing, and an intermittent odd creaking (Tartt's chair, maybe?) plague a recording that also includes lazy sound editing when splicing re-recorded segments into the audiobook. Listen using the speakers in your car/on your device for this one.. earbuds are a definite no-no.

Notwithstanding the poor production standards, this audiobook still rates 7.5 stars out of 10. It would be a fantastic accompaniment for anything from a long drive to a quiet night shift.. as a 'Plus' selection, that is.
