Publisher's Summary

The first novel in Isaac Asimov’s classic science-fiction masterpiece, the Foundation series

The epic saga that inspired the Apple TV+ series Foundation, now streaming. Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

For 12,000 years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. But only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future - to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save humankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire - both scientists and scholars - and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.

The Foundation novels of Isaac Asimov are among the most influential in the history of science fiction, celebrated for their unique blend of breathtaking action, daring ideas, and extensive worldbuilding. In Foundation, Asimov has written a timely and timeless novel of the best - and worst - that lies in humanity, and the power of even a few courageous souls to shine a light in a universe of darkness.

Lives up to its fame

Terrific storytelling from the perspectives of 3-4 narrators across spans of the world's decades, perfect for sporadic reading/listening. Its age shows in the now retro futurism but the political intrigue broad strokes of sociohistorical perspectives holds up surprisingly well 50+ years later. Wished the orator was more varied accents or tones, as it was a bit tough to tell at times which character was speaking, but overall still a terrific performance.

I’m hooked

What can I even say. This is some of the best science fiction I’ve ever read/listened to. And it’s so expertly narrated by Scott Brick!

I am tempted to buy the next book in the series now instead of waiting for my next credit!

highly overrated

I've heard so much and received such eager recommendations for this title, but like iRobot I find Asimov is simple and superficial. Maybe it's the shifting setting which neccisitates the superficial characters but whatever the reason I didn't enjoy this book, at least not as I hoped I might.

Not bad. Not amazing. Glad I read it.

Great Concept with few minor issues

I love the concept here. It still feels original deapite how dated this book is.
The author is good but it was hard to tell which character was speaking at times.
The story takes some jumps.
(spoilers)

I find it hard to believe that in a single generation a religion with zealots willing to die could be formed, or that ancestor worship and complete dissociation from the galactic Empire at large could occur in only three generations, especially from societies still capable of space flight.
but the overall positives largely outweigh these few minor issues of mine.

A Classic (though a little dated)

I wasn't expecting a collection of short stories! That's not a bad thing, it's just not something I would normally read. Due to the format of short stories, characters are given little time to develop, so you're really reading for the plot and themes of the book.

It's a short, easy read, but well crafted. This is a very dialogue heavy book, and every line of dialogue is used perfectly, no wasted fluff, and every sentence either propels the story, or details a character's intentions.

Unfortunately, this book was written and published in 1951 and it shows. Women are referred to as either wives, or people who will spend lots of money on vanity. That's it. In fact, not a single woman is named in this entire book, which if you think about it, is pretty strange to kind of forget to represent half the world's population even once. Oh well, a sign of the times I suppose, but it did stick out to me as a male reader, female readers might just see it as par for the course at this point sadly.

Representation aside, I do recommend this book to any sci-fi reader. Asimov is a staple of the community for a very good reason. His diction is tame, but he gets the point across and it's usually a good one. I've already purchased the sequel, hopefully it's just as good!

Great story, can’t wait for the next

A friend recommended and it didn’t disappoint. And knowing that there are 2 more to read makes the cliff hangers easier to handle. #audible1

Foundation

I found the book a bit hard to get into at first but thoroughly enjoyed it by the end. The narrator is good but sometimes fails to distinguish adequately between different characters. Overall worth a listen.

A Classic I lived to reexperience.

I read the Foundation series way back in high school, and while it shows its age in places, I still love it.

One of Asimov's best

Great narration. Scott Brick always really brings the book to life.

As far as the book itself goes, well, there's a reason it's one of the most beloved sci-fi books ever.
