Publisher's Summary

One Native Life is a look back down the road Richard Wagamese has traveled - from childhood abuse to adult alcoholism - in reclaiming his identity. It's about what he has learned as a human being, a man, and an Ojibway in his 52 years on Earth.

Whether he's writing about playing baseball, running away with the circus, making bannock, or attending a sacred bundle ceremony, these are stories told in a healing spirit. Through them, Wagamese reveals to listeners how to appreciate life for the journey it is.

Great insight and storytelling

Overall this was a great story told in a wonderful way. I think it is a great way for people to see life from another viewpoint. Although I lived in country it was on a farm and very different from the life Richard Wagnese lived both in the city and it the country. I appreciate this insight.

Beautiful

Richard Wagamese had such an amazing story to tell, and some of it was very tragic, but all of it was written so beautifully. The narration was a little bit fast so I slowed it down to 0.9 speed and it was perfect.

A story of finding connection, meaning & belonging

There are so many impactful messages in this One Native Life.

Trying to wrap your head around being a child Left in the bush - forgotten & cold.

How meaningful empathetic, supportive and loving adoptions & fosterings are to a child and how important it is.

Hearing the stories of the parents mimicking onto the children their experiences from Residential Schools through abuse and verbal assaults is so sad.

Thank you for writing this book .

Didn’t sound like a person from Ontario narrating but otherwise good listen.

I recommended to a family member . The only thing I didn’t quite agre with is the Pronunciations of some of the communities in Ontario were not right . The narrator sounded American ?

Excellent

I am starting to understand. This author writes with Truth, Grace and Heart. His words tell of soooo much and it all sounds poetic. His writing is as graceful as swans on the lake with various surprises popping up and again. I so very much enjoy His story telling.Ah-ho.

Poetic and relaxing

In a very loose autobiography, the authour presents some very casual realizations through his own meditations about life. It is very poetic. While it is not written in prose, there is a definite pattern to the writing, which I liken to a "rule of three". Often, but not universally, the authour will finish sentences with 3 adjectives, or write a paragraph about a specific subject in 3 descriptive lines, making the prose read like poetry, which I like in spite of that fact. I'm not a fan of poetry. I find most of it boring and too abstract to be interesting, but the way this book is written is just close enough to that rhythmic pattern to be interesting. It is definitely written for an older audience, one that already has many years under their belt, in order to fully appreciate his thoughts. It is a peaceful, easy read.

One man's life...inspiring

This book resonated with me on a spiritual level. His life, though of another generation, reflected my own on so many levels and I related to his words of cultural displacement. I have so much to learn but I'm glad I picked up this book because it has given me courage to continue my path of rediscovering my heritage. This is one book that will be listened to again and again.
