Story
Though it is the fastest growing religion in the world, Islam remains shrouded by ignorance and fear. What is the essence of this ancient faith? Is it a religion of peace or war? How does Allah differ from the God of Jews and Christians? Can an Islamic state be founded on democratic values such as pluralism and human rights? A writer and scholar of comparative religions, Reza Aslan has earned international acclaim for the passion and clarity he has brought to these questions.

Story
In layered prose and with thoughtful, accessible scholarship, Aslan narrates the history of religion as one long and remarkably cohesive attempt to understand the divine by giving it human traits and emotions. According to Aslan, this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains, making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. As Aslan writes, "Whether we are aware of it or not, and regardless if we are believers or not, what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves."

Story
As a student of Woodrow Wilson at Princeton, Howard Baskerville was aflame not only with the gospel of Jesus, but with the Wilsonian gospel that constitutional democracy is the birthright of all nations. Rather than become a small-town minister like his father in South Dakota, he volunteered for missionary service in Persia. Tabriz in 1907 was a hotbed of democratic revolution. Brilliant young firebrands were among Baskerville’s students at the Presbyterian school—and became his devoted friends. He lectured on freedom; they dedicated their lives to it.

He discusses ancient guided tours of heaven and hell, in which a living person observes the sublime blessings of heaven for those who are saved and the horrifying torments of hell for those who are damned.

Story
In a book that took eight years to research and write, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Ehrman explores how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty Creator of all things. Ehrman sketches Jesus's transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus's followers had visions of him after his death - alive again - did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God.

Publisher's Summary
From the internationally best-selling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth.
Two-thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher and miracle worker walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the "Kingdom of God". The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was captured, tortured, and executed as a state criminal.
Within decades after his shameful death, his followers would call him God.
Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor. Scores of Jewish prophets, preachers, and would-be messiahs wandered through the Holy Land, bearing messages from God. This was the age of zealotry - a fervent nationalism that made resistance to the Roman occupation a sacred duty incumbent on all Jews. And few figures better exemplified this principle than the charismatic Galilean who defied both the imperial authorities and their allies in the Jewish religious hierarchy.
Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels against the historical sources, Aslan describes a man full of conviction and passion, yet rife with contradiction; a man of peace who exhorted his followers to arm themselves with swords; an exorcist and faith healer who urged his disciples to keep his identity a secret; and ultimately the seditious "King of the Jews" whose promise of liberation from Rome went unfulfilled in his brief lifetime.

The true story of Jesus Christ
It is great to read an impartial history of Jesus, who never intended to create a new religion and, one of many zealots in his time, he failed utterly to create a new Jewish state. Unlike the others in his time, and due to the odd quirk or two of history, his story has led to the creation of a worldwide religion that bears next to nothing to the original teachings of Jesus.

Great Book, Eye opening, Love the Author's Passion
Honestly I kinda feel sad that the book is over. Even though it was history based, I was so absorbed into the author's narrative. Love it. Rarely got to the point that my mind was allowed to wonder around

The story I been waiting for
As a lapsed/non-practicing/deeply disappointed Catholic this is the story I've been waiting for. For the better part of half a century a constant question/issue for me interns of modern Christian dogma has always been "what is the historical context in which Jesus lived?" Raza Aslan brought everything into focus and not just with a profound theological understanding of the evolution of Christianity but historical proof to back it up. A book I throughly enjoyed, have recommended and will re-listen.

A great listen for biblical history
This book does a thorough overview of the history of the early new testament and separates facts from faith in unpacking the narratives popularized by Christianity.

A refreshing & valuable resource.
it's so nice that Reza Aslan read his book himself. He's a fantastic speaker and his delivery did not need someone else's interpretation.
it was always hard for me to believe that a religion as old and large as Christianity was not manipulated along its evolutionary path by different people for different purposes. to find a well written resource that proves my suspicions and such a thorough and compelling manner really fills my mental coffers.
I hope this man writes more books because he is honest, and delivers things in an unflinching yet respectful and sober manner. it would be nice to hear his take on the connections between the New Testament, the Old Testament, the Quran and the Torah so as to get an idea of how the abrahamic religions evolved, differ and are similar. So many other authors seem to have an agenda. Reza Aslan might as well, but, he seemed trustworthy and it did not hinder my experience.

Liked not getting sold a belief system
I liked Reza's goal of objectively looking at the historical information about Jesus. He tries to get a picture of what really happened and drives his theories from evidence. I like how he separates into events he is (reasonably more) sure of and those that are more a matter of faith or doctrine. Also how little we actually know about yet other things.
He doesn't tell you what to think or believe and I find his delivery respectful to the Christian faith.
After reading his work, in line with the scientific approach he takes to reading texts, I looked for criticism of the book. I was disappointed to find most criticism attacked him as a person, just not liking his work for not matching Christian catechism. I hoped criticism instead would focus on disputing his timeline of events or interpretations, or pointed out other historical documents that contradicted his ideas.
Sadly, his detractors don't seem to attack him over his source material or disagree with specific statements; more often they express personal attacks instead, which doesn't help me.
As a Christian, his work did spark more interest in me learning more about what the real truths are in the actual life of Jesus. From Reza's work we can be sure Jesus actually existed and that He did spectacular things. Resurrection is a matter of faith, that he suggests can neither be proved or disproved by the historical record. I find this a respectful attitude for a very complex, personal and emotional question at the heart of our own identity.
