It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Histoire
After arriving on Block Island to find her birth mother, Blake Bronson becomes convinced she’s the heroine of a gothic novel—the kind that allowed her intermittent escape from a traumatic childhood. How else to explain the torrential rain, the salt-worn mansion known as White Hall, and the restless ghost purported to haunt its halls? But before Blake can discern the novel’s ending, she’s found dead, murdered in a claw-foot tub. The proprietress of White Hall stands accused.

Histoire
Tess Delaney makes a living restoring stolen treasures to their rightful owners. People like Annelise Winther, who refuses to sell her long-gone mother’s beloved necklace - despite Tess’s advice. To Annelise, the jewel’s value is in its memories. But Tess’s own history is filled with gaps: a father she never met, a mother who spent more time traveling than with her daughter. So Tess is shocked when she discovers the grandfather she never knew is in a coma. And that she has been named in his will to inherit half of Bella Vista, a 100-acre apple orchard in the magical Sonoma town called Archangel. The rest is willed to Isabel Johansen. A half-sister she’s never heard of.

Description
Edie Burchill and her mother have never been close, but when a long lost letter arrives with the return address of Milderhurst Castle, Kent, printed on its envelope, Edie begins to suspect that her mother’s emotional distance masks an old secret. Evacuated from London as a 13-year-old girl, Edie’s mother is chosen by the mysterious Juniper Blythe, and taken to live at Milderhurst Castle with the Blythe family.
Fifty years later, Edie too is drawn to Milderhurst and the eccentric Sisters Blythe. Old ladies now, the three still live together, the twins nursing Juniper, whose abandonment by her fiancé in 1941 plunged her into madness. Inside the decaying castle, Edie begins to unravel her mother’s past. But there are other secrets hidden in the stones of Milderhurst Castle, and Edie is about to learn more than she expected. The truth of what happened in the distant hours has been waiting a long time for someone to find it.

I love listening to books as I drive, walk etc. This book had so many twists and turns. When I thought I had figured out what happened there would be a twist that I didn’t see coming. I will be listening to all of her books.

An engaging read, filled with complex characters
If you enjoy trying to predict what will come next, then find yourself completely wrong, you will find this book top notch. If you enjoy getting to know the characters in all their complexity, good and bad, you will be completely satisfied. If you want to understand the writing process and the writers behind great stories, you will revel in the added bonus - you will glimpse a little understanding into why writers must write

Pretty great
This book started slow and ended great. I almost ‘put it down’ but kept listening. It progressively got more intriguing until I couldn’t put it down. It was mostly unpredictable and didn’t resort to cliches. Yay! A good find. :)

Lovely Story
This is a lovely story about family dynamics, secrets and love. The story weaves the wonderful tale o a daughter learning about her mother's past as well of the story of 3 sisters.
I was enthralled with the story from start to finish and a little sad when it came to an end. I will miss some of these characters
