Description
Told with deceptive simplicity, this is the provocative story of a boy who experiences something incredible and undertakes something impossible. In the telling it questions every value we have taken for granted and reexamines our most deeply held beliefs.

At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting - he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth.

In the tradition of Out of My Mind, Wonder, and Mockingbird, this is an intensely moving middle grade novel about being an outsider, coping with loss, and discovering the true meaning of family. Willow Chance is a 12-year-old genius, obsessed with nature and diagnosing medical conditions, who finds it comforting to count by sevens. It has never been easy for her to connect with anyone other than her adoptive parents, but that hasn’t kept her from leading a quietly happy life...until now.

Histoire
Billie Jo has a great deal to forgive: Her father for causing the accident that killed her mother; her mother for leaving when Billie Jo needed her most; and herself for being the cause of her own sorrow. Daddy's too wrung out to help her, and there's no one else to care. So at 14, Billie Jo must heal herself - even if it means tearing up her roots and leaving behind everything she's ever known.

Ce que les critiques en disent
Newbery Medal Winner, 1994
"This is a compelling prospect for family listening. Initially Rifkin's voice seems too regional to portray the characters of this utopian/dystopian world, but he convincingly conveys the anticipation of the coming-of-age ceremony of Jonas and his friends. As the meaning of Jonas’ selection as “Receiver of Memory” unfolds, Rifkin’s characterizations become more powerful. Although the story drives the presentation, Rifkin’s juxtaposition of the young boy and the old Giver has tremendous effect. His voice for the Giver becomes increasingly weary and strained while Jonas' gains strength. Sharing this audiobook in a family or a classroom offers a valuable opportunity to respond to and discuss Lowry’s moving novel." (AudioFile magazine)
"A powerful and provocative novel." (The New York Times)
"Lowry is once again in top form...unwinding a tale fit for the most adventurous readers." (Publishers Weekly)
"The author makes real abstract concepts, such as the meaning of a life in which there are virtually no choices to be made and no experiences with deep feelings. This tightly plotted story and its believable characters will stay with readers for a long time." (School Library Journal)

Such a Classic - Needs a New Narrator
This book brought back so many good memories from reading it in high school - what a great classic novel! The narrator is outdated, and it always weirds me out when grown men try and read the parts of young children. Could also do without the background music - no thank you.

Beautifully simple story
I first read this story in highschool and love it, decided it was a simple story I enjoyed and would like as background noise so I bought it here and honestly?
it holds up, the story isn't anything the write home about, it's a pretty simple story about independence and the self but it's solid and told well, the narrator isn't perfect but he fits and it makes beautiful background noise to fall asleep too.
Honestly still one of my favourite books because it knows what it is and doesn't try to be anything else.

Good story different than expected
My classes never read this book, it was in most classrooms but the cover to me looked ugly and the description didn’t sound interesting so I never read. I finally listened to it because of the US banning it in many states.
The story was very good, reminded me of 1984.
As others pointed out there was parts in the audio with odd music that can be distracting or can help you refocus so that could be a positive or a negative
