In seinem Hauptwerk, der "Untersuchung in Betreff des menschlichen Verstandes" von 1748, schreibt er auch "Über die akademische oder skeptische Philosophie".
Hume steckt dabei die Geltungsbereiche von Vernunft, Zweifel, Sinneswahrnehmung und Einbildungskraft ab, wenn er der Frage nachgeht, was man unter einem Skeptiker verstehe und wie weit das philosophische Prinzip des Zweifels getrieben werden könne.
