The Imperium's most unlikely hero is back, reluctantly returning to the front line and hoping his luck will hold out!

Listen to it because: this entry from the Cain Archives takes the Hero of the Imperium into his greatest - and possibly last - battle. He's an old man in this one, pulled out of retirement for one last mission as the hordes of Chaos close in on the Imperium....

The story: after a long and distinguished career defending the Imperium from its many enemies, Commissar Cain is enjoying a well-deserved retirement on Perlia, teaching in a schola progenium. But when a Black Crusade threatens the sector, all able-bodied citizens must rise to the defence, including Cain and his cadets. As the forces of Chaos overwhelm Perlia, can the wily commissar prove himself to be a real hero of the Imperium one last time?

Another great contribution to the series. Diving into the next one. Will be sad when all fought up.

Commissar Cain: Propaganda or the Luckiest SOB in the Imperium?

I love the Cain saga, it is easily my favourite 40k series because it breaks most of the conventions of Everything always getting worse in . It’s practically reverse grim darkness, a light hearted parody of it’s own universe. The fact that the storyline has been building up to what I can only assume will be a BIG finisher in the next book. And I appreciate that it also treats the Necrons with the proper respect as UTTERLY TERRIFYING monsters that are effectively unstoppable and Cain Knows this through bitter experience.

Another great story with a great end fight which only highlights why CAIN is a hero.

predictable but enjoyable

This one was a little more interesting just from the bigger events happening in the background this is a small part of. Seeing Cain as a teacher at the beginning was also different and showed a new side of his character a little bit. It feels like there are more moving parts here in terms of the higher number of factions and relevant characters, which I think makes it more fun. The way things play out allows slightly more room for character stuff in general, and it doesn't detract from the action or the pace. It's hard to know how to rate the story. It's pretty simple and straightforward and you can see where things are going. It doesn't break the mold, but I think it is well done for what it is and there are a lot of enjoyable elements.

The voice performances were great as usual. Things are still very fast paced with the same kind of sardonic humour.

If you like the rest of the series this one is worth continuing on to. If you've never tried this series before, I think this works as a starting point too. It gives a sense of the various factions of the setting without being overwhelming or doing big info dumps. It's an enjoyable action sci-fi series.
