Publisher's Summary

*NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*

The New York Times bestselling series returns when Orphan X faces his most challenging mission ever in Gregg Hurwitz's Dark Horse.

This audiobook includes a bonus conversation between the author and Jack Carr.

Evan Smoak is a man with many identities and a challenging past. As Orphan X, he was a government assassin for the off-the-books Orphan Program. After he broke with the Program, he adopted a new name and a new mission—The Nowhere Man, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble. Having just survived an attack on his life, and the complete devastation of his base of operations, as well as his complicated (and deepening) relationship with his neighbor Mia Hall, Evan isn't interested in taking on a new mission. But one finds him anyway.

Aragon Urrea is a kingpin of a major drug-dealing operation in South Texas. He's also the patron of the local area—suppyling employment in legitimate operations, providing help to the helpless, a rough justice to the downtrodden, and a future to a people normally with little hope. He's complicated—a not completely good man, who does bad things for often good reasons. However, for all his money and power, he is helpless when one of the most vicious cartels kidnaps his innocent eighteen year old daughter, spiriting her away into the armored complex that is their headquarters in Mexico. With no other way to rescue his daughter, he turns to The Nowhere Man.

Now not only must Evan figure out how to get into the impregnable fortress of a heavily armed, deeply paranoid cartel leader, but he must decide if he should help a very bad man—no matter how just the cause.

Unbelievable thrill ride!

I have to give full marks to Gregg for his ability to flesh out the subtle nuances of his characters and the cadence and word choices for his narrative descriptions. Combined with Scott’s incredible timing and ability to develop distinctive characters with his tone and accents, is like listening to an old fashioned radio drama. I think Gregg has perfected a writing style that compliments the audiobook. I was riveted.

Excellent

Loved this book! Really liked the direction that Evan relationship is going with Joey and Mia. He is showing his human side.

Always great.

Of course the book was fantastic. Can't go wrong with Gregg Hurwitz and Scott Brick.

I also liked the extra interview at the end with Mark Greaney. The Gray Man and Orphan X are big heroes in my fiction world, and it was nice to hear the authors chat. And yes! I definitely check out what the famous audio book readers are doing Scott Brick, Ray Porter, and even RC Bray. I bought a text book by one of these authors once just so it could help me sleep- in a good way.

One other aspect of audio books versus paper books is the adjustable read-speed. I will admit Orphan X goes to 90% speed just so I can make it last a bit longer. Great job.

SUPERB ONCE AGAIN P

My only complaint is that the books always end and I have to wait for the next one.

Hurwitz does it again.

There are very few authors who are able to keep my attention over a series of books, but here we are. These books are fun, relentless and fascinating. I recommend this series to everyone. My only complaint is that they are not long enough! And as always Scott Brick knocks it out if the park.

Problems

I have enjoyed all of Gregg Hurwitz’s Orphan X books but my main problem with this one is that it felt recycled. I’ve read it before even though it’s release date was given as February 22, 2022. If it was a re-released version, it should tell us so we don’t spend money that has already been paid once for the same story. Too many times this has been the practice of other authors who try to cash in on the same story but with a different cover.
Also, while I like Scott Brick’s voice because it so expressive, I felt that he was being overly dramatic when certain situations didn’t require talking fast and loud.
Kind of disappointing in the end.

Just couldn't get through it

It just didn't feel like an Orphan X book, Scott Brick does his usual sterling job, but even he can't get this one back on its feet. An odd miss for Gregg Hurwitz.

Violent and tedious

The over active tedious descriptions enabled me to skip whole chapters.
The narrations were so over the top I often fast forwarded so I could hear the outcome

Disappointing

I really like this series. But this book is very very disappointing. Very very graphically dark. The bottom pit if humanity in full display. I could not get past half way
