Publisher's Summary
In the fall of 1993, the quiet suburb of Harting Farms is shocked when children begin to vanish, and one is found dead near December Park - a great, sweeping expanse that is sunken below the streets and surrounded on three sides by vast woodlands, a place children believe is haunted. Newspapers call the abductor the Piper because he has come to lead children away, while kids whisper darker names for him in the school halls. Angelo Mazzone and his friends discover a link to the dead girl and take up the search for the killer, vowing to stop the Piper's reign of terror. Their teenage pledge becomes a journey of self-discovery and an odyssey into the darkness of their own hometown.

not scary at all
this book is beautifully written, the relationship between the main protagonist and his friends and family are worth the read alone. But, make no mistake, this book is in no way scary or a horror novel by any means. Definitely a must read

good
I am such a sucker for kids in peril novels. I don't know why. I guess I find them nostalgic or something? Obviously I never fought monsters or killers in my childhood, but I feel like they manage to capture the experience of youth so well, better than actual bildungsroman, even.
Malfi is very hit or miss to me. This one's a hit. It's not fantastic, some of the characters are a bit interchangeable, and the writing is definitely prone to getting purple
make it very hard to put The mystery moved at a realistically slow pace, and the amateur sleuth antics of the child protagonists also felt pretty believable. Nothing they did was outside the realm of the possible, which I appreciate. They weren't improbably skilled or smart, just determined.
The solution was good. It didn't come out of nowhere, but it was still a shock, and quite emotional, with a bittersweet ending.
It was a nice one.

Absolute masterpiece
I definitely agree with other reviews that the story isn’t so much a strong thriller, but a coming of age story. The characters are very well written and their interactions are spot on to myself and my friends at that age. There’s times where I had to stop the book just because I was laughing. The mystery/thriller aspect was perfectly wound into the characters lives, and through their investigation the mystery is played out. Loved it.
