Publisher's Summary
Imagine being a 13-year-old girl in love with boys, school, family - life itself. Then suddenly, in a matter of hours, your life is shattered by the arrival of a foreign army. You can no longer attend school, have possessions, talk to your neighbors. One day your family has to leave your house behind and move into a crowded ghetto, where you lose all privacy and there isn’t enough food to eat. Still you manage, somehow, to adjust. But there is much, much worse to come...
This is the memoir of Elli Friedmann, who was 13 years old in March 1944, when the Nazis invaded Hungary. It describes her descent into the hell of Auschwitz, a concentration camp where, because of her golden braids, she was selected for work instead of extermination. In intimate, excruciating details she recounts what it was like to be one of the few teenage camp inmates, and the tiny but miraculous twists of fate that helped her survive against all odds. I Have Lived a Thousand Years is a searing story of cruelty and suffering, but at the same time it is a story of hope, faith, perseverance, and love. It will make you see the world in a new way - and it will make you want to change what you see.

A very clear recollection of one’s journey of survival…
Thank you for sharing your story with us. It never ceases to amaze me of the amount that a person can endure to live.

Different than many holocaust stories
Couldn’t get used to the narrator but the story more than makes up for that. A different view of the holocaust than other stories I’ve heard. I recommend

Hero story
Crazy to believe this story line. Against many odds did they all survive and stay together. Only criticism is the way the author said Mommy. It was used a few too many times in the story.

A moving account
I have studied much about WWII, have visited a concentration camp and have read the biographies of survivors, but have read few first person accounts of those while in the camps. I suppose it is fear of my ability to bear first hand details of the grisly reality, yet that’s also why I think it is important to do so. Livia Bitton-Jackson’s was a good entry point. Absolutely heartbreaking, she tells her story with a child’s frankness that is compelling. Her poetic lines are haunting and even uplifting at times. I feel I can now bear to read more, alas after a break.
I also learned a few things about the early days of ghettos that I hadn’t learned before.

narrator
loved the story, but had a hard time feeling it due to the narrating, felt sometimes more of a whining than pain.

I have lived a thousand lives review
A difficult subject told in a way that made it easier to listen and hear the true story and experiences the writer went through.
