Elizabeth Black is the headmistress of a girls' school in 1830s Victorian London. She is also a well-respected author of stories written both for and about the upper-class ladies of Victorian society. But by night, she writes very different kinds of stories - the Penny Dreadfuls that are all the rage among the working-class men. Under the pseudonym Charles King, Elizabeth has written about dashing heroes fighting supernatural threats, intelligent detectives solving grisly murders, and dangerous outlaws romancing helpless women.

Description
One final cry - "God almighty, help us!" - and suddenly Hannah's world shifted violently, and a blinding collision scattered her mind and shook her bones. Then came the pain, the freezing water, and a hand reached for hers before all faded into darkness.
When Hannah awakes in a warm and welcoming room she has never seen before - tended to by kind, unfamiliar faces - most of her memory has been swept away but not all. She recalls fragments of the accident. She remembers a baby. And a ring on her finger reminds her of a lie. But most of all, there is a secret. And in this house of strangers, she can trust no one but herself to keep it.

I loved this book!
I love all of Julie Klassen's books but this one is my favorite. I loved that the main character is more human and flawed like we all are. Some steamy parts is a welcome change also. Simply perfection.

Julie Klassen’s love or hate book.
I read some negative reviews of this book and felt uncertain if I wanted to read it. The primary upset was that Hanna Rogers felt attracted to two men, which (they claimed) was inappropriate for a Christian book.
Yeah, like Christians aren’t humans! Like Christians never feel confused and make bad decisions. Seriously, people!
I agree that some scenes were quite steamy compared to other Ms. Klassen’s books. But none were “dirty” and only showed the reality of our humanity.
Others noted that the book was not published by Ms. Klassen’s usual Christian publisher because of the theme.
Then I thought, “What kind of life do these readers have that they would not enjoy a fictional story that shows our weaknesses and failures”? It felt like casting stones at people that experienced Jesus’ redemptive work.
Most Christian romances talk about the bare minimum of faith and trust. We hardly find one that shows how much we need Jesus.
On that note, there were not many biblical citations, but if non-Christians were to read it and enjoy her style, they could potentially read her other books, which present Christian themes.
The romantic theme is secondary until halfway through the book.
I enjoyed how the characters developed.
I found the pace too slow initially, and I was not fond of James.
