Publisher's Summary

In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

Based on a series of case studies - including the media's dichotomous treatment of "worthy" versus "unworthy" victims, "legitimizing" and "meaningless" Third World elections, and devastating critiques of media coverage of the US wars against Indochina - Herman and Chomsky draw on decades of criticism and research to propose a Propaganda Model to explain the media's behavior and performance. Their new introduction updates the Propaganda Model and the earlier case studies, and it discusses several other applications.

American media a sham

Enlightening demonstration on how the American public perception evolved to support it's own corrupt and failing capitalist regime.

a staggering indictment of the US media

Givin discussions of " fakenews" this book provides a thorough background of the extraordinary negligence of the US media. the authors follow several case studies of American Foreign Wars and the lack of critical press coverage in print and on television. It reveals an appalling double standard whose primary aim is to build support for American imperialism.

the authors posit a propaganda model for the American Media, and they validate the predictions of this model with several case studies. one drawback of the author's analysis is that it is exclusively focused on Foreign Wars. I would like to have seen more analysis of domestic issues.

for pros

complicated book. I think it's kinda made more for people who know a lot already about the subject; like journalists.

a slog, but important

3% theory, 90% evidence analysis, 7% conclusion. An important work to understand the pervasiveness of information control. Spread this one out over a long period of time.
