Story
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Publisher's Summary
In this landmark work on a subject too often dismissed as paranormal or disreputable, Jeffrey Meldrum gives us the first book on Sasquatch to be written by a scientist with impeccable academic credentials. He gives an objective look at the facts in a field mined with hoaxes and sensationalism.
Meldrum reports on the work of a team of experts from a wide variety of fields who were assembled to examine the evidence for a large, yet undiscovered, North American primate. He reviews the long history of this mystery - which long predates the "Bigfoot" flap of the late 50s - and explains all the scientific pros and cons in a clear and accessible style.
Anyone who has pondered the mysteries of human evolution will be fascinated and eager to join Dr. Meldrum in drawing their own conclusion.

A Scientific/Cryptozoological Treatise
I honestly enjoy Bigfoot Conjecture. 'Psychic Phenomena' or 'Extraterrestrial Origin' theories (á la Linda Godfrey) are fun to think about - but are implicitly illogical. I am far more intrigued by the Anthropological/Natural Origin approach - starting with the premise that an unidentified primate is hiding among us and proceeding from there. Jeff Meldrum compiles evidence of the creature's existence from the standpoint of an open-minded naturalist. The writing is clear, examples are compiled lovingly but systematically, and he accumulates fascinating posits from an exhaustive array of at least semi-credible researchers. Altogether, this book makes a genuinely thought-provoking argument.
I personally think it's obvious this hypothetical organism Does Not Exist
..but the author's encyclopaedic collation and Socratic reasoning makes the existence of a Sasquatch almost believable.
(*Please Note: Meldrum is by no means a "skeptic persuaded by the evidence". He is pretty clearly invested in a narrative. Don't expect an unbiased discussion - but his quasi-scientific approach is appreciated)
Tom Perkins is an admirably professional reader. The topic (and approach) could easily be textbook-level dry - the biomechanical discussion is pretty technical, for example - but Perkins not only reads clearly and at a great pace, but with enough enthusiasm to keep me interested. Outstanding narration.
Taken 'in toto', this book met my expectations - avoiding (notoriously unreliable) eyewitness accounts and the more nonsensical theories. Viewed from a Scientific Angle, the topic is far more 'fun' to ponder imo.. and Dr. Meldrum embraces that perspective and runs with it. If you're a like-minded Bigfoot enthusiast - looking for a solid academic discussion - I can easily recommend this 5-star production. If you want a more lighthearted treatment (or a collection of campfire stories) - keep looking.
TO THE PRODUCERS: Even though this book is designed to be a more in-depth companion to Dr. Meldrum's documentary work, a PDF with the photographic material discussed would be invaluable.

I wanted to love it.....
I respected the scientific approach taken; however, the format and narrative were much too dry. The information presented is compelling, but it should have/could have been presented in a much more interesting way. Historically, the topic of Sasquatch has been exploited and derided. So, I can appreciate that the author may feel pressured to rely heavily on the scientific nature of the information he presents to retain his credibility. And I believe his work is very credible. However, it was too dry even for someone with a scientific background. I wish this work had been edited for a more general audience, so that it would be more enjoyable to listen to. I couldn't quite make it all the way through, which seems a great shame.
