diverse voices

I picked up this book earlier today and I couldn't put it down. I listened for the full 12 hours. The stories contained within this audiobook are as compelling as they are diverse. Although the editor is an advocate for the sex workers rights movement she makes a conscious effort to include stories and viewpoints from former sex workers who take an abolitionist approach to prostitution. the book benefits strongly from this diversity, as stories are juxtaposed and put into conversation with each other.

this audio performance also benefits from a plurality of narrators, amplifying the effect of the disunity. before starting this book I was familiar with some aspect of sex worker history, but I was also surprised and appreciative of a discussion of lesbian sex workers.

one weakness of this anthology is that it does not include writings from trans sex workers. a modern Expanded Edition should include these stories..
