Publisher's Summary

An artificial intelligence on a star-spanning mission explores the farthest horizons of human potential—and its own purpose—in a mind-bending short story by New York Times bestselling author John Scalzi.

Equipped with the entirety of human knowledge, a sentient ship is launched on a last-ditch journey to find a new home for civilization. Trillions of miles. Tens of thousands of years. In the space between, the AI has plenty of time to think about life, the vastness of the universe, everything it was meant to do, and—with a perspective created but not limited by humans—what it should do.

John Scalzi’s Slow Time Between the Stars is part of The Far Reaches, a collection of science-fiction stories that stretch the imagination and open the heart. They can be read or listened to in one sitting.

Awesome

Super condensed version of a story that perhaps takes place over millions of years. I loved it, but it was just too short!

Would love more

While not really similar to Cities in Flight it evokes a similar feeling because of the sheer scale. Held me from first to last. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a nice hour.

Love Scalzi but the concept has already been done

Scalzi is one of my favourite authors so when I saw this I figured it'd be a quick, fun listen. Now, it is quick, it is fun, but it isn't original.

I was amazed to hear many of the same concepts and ideas as 2016's "We Are Legion, We Are Bob". It's a bit odd but I'm hoping this is just one of those cases like the movies "A Bug's Life" and "Antz" coming out around the same time.

So while it's a good listen, if you want a series that really explores the idea of a self aware machine originally designed to find new planets to colonise who takes their own independence and explores the universe, check out the "Bob" novels by Dennis E. Taylor.
