Story
Few of us meet our dogs at Day One. The dog who will eventually become an integral part of our family, our constant companion, and our best friend is born without us into a family of her own. A puppy's critical early development into the dog we come to know is usually missed entirely. Dog researcher Alexandra Horowitz aimed to change that with her family's new pup, Quiddity (Quid). In this scientific memoir she charts Quid's growth from wee grub to boisterous sprite, from her birth to her first birthday.

In Our Dogs, Ourselves, Alexandra Horowitz explores all aspects of this unique and complex relationship that “dog lovers will savor and absorb” (Shelf Awareness). Publisher's Summary
The instant number one international best seller
In this path-breaking guide, two of the world’s most popular and trusted pet-care advocates reveal how to delay aging and provide a long, happy, healthy life for our canine companions.
Like their human counterparts, dogs have been getting sicker and dying prematurely over the past few decades. Why? Scientists are beginning to understand that the chronic diseases afflicting humans - cancer, obesity, diabetes, organ degeneration, and autoimmune disorders - also beset canines. As a result, our beloved companions struggle with preventable health problems throughout much of their lives. Because dogs can’t make health and lifestyle decisions for themselves, it’s up to pet parents to make smart, science-backed choices on their behalf.
Rodney Habib and Karen Becker, DVM, travelled the world collecting wisdom from top geneticists, microbiologists, and longevity researchers. They also interviewed people whose dogs have lived into their 20s and even 30s. The result is this unprecedented and comprehensive guide, filled with surprising information, invaluable advice, and inspiring stories about dogs and the people who love them. The Forever Dog prescriptive plan can be tailored to the genetic predisposition of particular breeds or mixes. The authors discuss various types of food - including details commercial manufacturers don’t want us to know - and offer recipes, tips, and easy solutions for ensuring our dogs obtain the nutrients they need. They also explore how external factors that we often overlook can greatly affect a dog’s overall health and well-being - including the role our own lifestyles and our vets’ choices play. Indeed, the health equation works both ways and can travel “up the leash”.
This definitive dog-care guide empowers us with the knowledge we need to make wise choices and keep our dogs healthy and happy for years to come.

A decent read
Written and orated in layperson terms for the dog parent, it's a good mix of current research and practical tips related to the health of dogs. Most of it is common sense, but packaged in an informative and non-judgmental way.

Helpful and well written
This was helpful for both my dog and my own health. I now cook my dogs food every week. I asked my vet for some guidance on diet and the only thing they told me was to keep him on the kibble because his food will be unbalanced and that he needed to lose weight so cut his food in 1/2 (even though that was SO incorrect). I am very happy I found this book. I use BalanceIT.

Okay, but better read in hard copy
This book was informative and extremely well read by Jean Ann Douglass (I'm very impressed at how easily she pronounced all those chemical names!) but ultimately it's not a good book for audio. There is way too much detailed information in it, making it impossible to take it all in. It would much better be read, so the reader can mark important details, take notes, and get a full understanding of the subject matter.
I bought the hard copy so that I can go through it in detail and pick out the parts that were most important to me and my dogs. Especially the nutritional info.

Very informative & inspiring - Well Done!
While I have already been feeding my dog a species appropriate diet for quite some time, I wanted to listen to this book to gain additional knowledge about how dogs function, what they need, and how we can do better by them, and wow - it doesn't disappoint!
The book takes a deep dive into the dog world, and while it was a slow start at the beginning, it's well worth the wait to the middle and end. The author's reference lots of scientific information, and whiles it's easy to be overwhelmed, don't be! I often kept notes while listening along for me to reference specific information in the future.
I would highly recommend this book for both first time dog owners, and seasoned owners alike. Well done 👍
