Publisher's Summary

The Golden Couple is the next electrifying audiobook from Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, the number one New York Times best-selling author duo behind You Are Not Alone, An Anonymous Girl, and The Wife Between Us.

If Avery Chambers can’t fix you in 10 sessions, she won’t take you on as a client. Her successes are phenomenal—she helps people overcome everything from domineering parents to assault—and almost absorbs the emptiness she sometimes feels since her husband’s death.

Marissa and Mathew Bishop seem like the golden couple—until Marissa cheats. She wants to repair things, both because she loves her husband and for the sake of their eight-year-old son. After a friend forwards an article about Avery, Marissa takes a chance on this maverick therapist, who lost her license due to controversial methods.

When the Bishops glide through Avery’s door and Marissa reveals her infidelity, all three are set on a collision course. Because the biggest secrets in the room are still hidden, and it’s no longer simply a marriage that’s in danger.

A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press

"My favorite kind of thriller: a guessing game filled with characters you care about and twists you don't see coming. The Golden Couple takes a deep dive into a marriage, where what you see on the surface is not necessarily the truth, and the results are mesmerizing. Add to this a therapist who doesn't play by the rules and you have an utterly compelling, spellbinding read." (Lisa Jewell, author of Then She Was Gone and Invisible Girl)

"Narrators Marin Ireland and Karissa Vacker dazzle as they deliver this twisted domestic thriller." (AudioFile)

Great story

Easily hooked right from the beginning, narrators do a great job, you can really identify the characters.

Twists and Turns

This novel starts with one vista, and leaves you questioning new angles with every chapter. I couldn’t put it down and will definitely listen to other work by these authors.

Their best yet

Although the final plot twist after the climax was a bit of a stretch, the overall story was probably the most difficult to figure out the ending too and the most captivating to listen to. I also loved that they combined therapy with a detective element, super clever. My favourite book by these two authors yet.

Spectacular story

I really enjoyed the story, the performance and the element of surprise used quite often in the dirty! Very unexpected!

This was okay. Not great. The narrator was fine but I found her male voices to be a bit strange. Not that I could do any better, but I have heard better. It almost sounded like she was doing the voice the way Jerry Seinfeld voiced his girlfriend's stomach in the oil bladder balloon episode.

Back to the story!! There were so many characters, and too many convenient coincidences (both big and small, haha, okay enough with the Seinfeld references). I didn't buy the story. Not at the beginning where we learned that the therapist lost her license yet people still sought her out, or during the story (see coincidences, above) or the ending which was too neatly wrapped up, unsurprising and uninteresting.

I'm giving it 3 stars, though, because it kept pulling me along and after the halfway point I was eager to hear more and more. The story was so weird, I was expecting some kind of mind-blowing ending and started thinking along the lines of Shutter Island. Nope. Too bad it was not a satisfying book, overall.

A simple story, well told

Really enjoyed it. I tend to measure these thrillers based on how easy it is for me to figure out the secret. If you pay attention you’ll figure it all out super early on but still a great listen.

A good listen

Overall a good listen

Great performances

Story line went on a bit too long and it was like “get to the point already”. I think it lacked some additional substance to make me ever really think about this book again once I finish it.

I would recommend for those who like mystery and a sliver of thriller

Great Storyline

I enjoyed this audiobook very much. It was easy to follow and never boring. I’ve read enough psychological thrillers to often not be surprised at the “whodunnit” outcome, but this book kept my attention from beginning to end. I wasn’t surprised at the end but that didn’t keep me from being fascinated by the book as a whole, and especially by Avery and her methods.
The only complaint I had was that while the narration was generally very good, the voices of Skip and Matthew were poorly done, perhaps because it’s difficult for a woman to imitate a man’s voice. They were hard to listen to, but it didn’t stop me from continuing. Great story!

Excellent story with a super intriguing plot twist

Definitely recommend! This story had me guessing how it would end up until the very moment of reveal. Twists and turns all over, I loved it.
