Story
In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Now Joe is a full Guardsman, with his own ship and a snide partner bot who hates humans almost as much as he hates other bots. To the pirates he hunts, Joe is known as the Butcher. His bloody reputation has landed him in the center of a sweeping conspiracy that threatens to stamp out the galaxy’s last surviving human settlements.

Story
Captain Keyes is loved by the public but hated by Command. He captains the UHS Providence, an aging supercarrier and the last human ship not dependent on dark tech - technology humanity has used to rule over the galaxy since barely defeating the Ixa in the First Galactic War. Dominance has come at a cost. Over the decades, old allies have grown resentful, and when dark tech itself fails, Captain Keyes’ predictions start coming true: those old allies are now enemies.

Publisher's Summary
Ten thousand years ago, a single alien super-ship survived a desperate battle. The vessel's dying crew set the AI on automatic to defend the smashed rubble of their planet. Legend has it the faithful ship continues to patrol the empty battlefield, obeying its last order throughout the lonely centuries.
In the here and now, Earth needs a miracle. Out of the Beyond invade the New Men, stronger, faster and smarter than the old. Their superior warships and advanced technology destroy every fleet sent to stop them. Their spies have infiltrated the government and traitors plague Earth's military.
Captain Maddox of Star Watch Intelligence wonders if the ancient legend could be true. Would such an old starship be able to face the technology of the New Men? On the run from killers, Maddox searches for a group of talented misfits. He seeks Keith Maker, a drunken ex-strikefighter ace, Doctor Dana Rich the clone thief stuck on a prison planet and Lieutenant Valerie Noonan, the only person to have faced the New Men in battle and survived to tell about it.
Maddox has to find a place hidden in the Beyond and bring back a ship no one can enter. If he fails, the New Men will replace the old. If he succeeds, humanity might just have a fighting chance...

Great story
I enjoyed the story but found the audio too bass and too low to hear from time to time.

a good story
I really enjoyed the story and once started, I had a hard time to stop myself listening.
the gentleman reading it has a nice, consistent voice but struggles with the female parts. Hence the 4/5 stars.

worst book so far
Interesting story premise but not well written. Narration was terrible, so much so that I could not finish the book. I will not purchase any book with this narrator.

The.. The.. The.. Narrator.
So. - Woah; do I have a few things to say about this book.
I started this series knowing the first book was narrated by David Stifel, and the subsequent ones by Mark Boyett. I have listed to books read by Mark before and greatly enjoyed them. So to get to those performances and to know the whole story, I needed to go through the first in the series read by David. I went into this knowing there was a change in narrators for a reason, and I see exactly why it was done. I may have gone into this a bit biased knowing there was a change, so that may have affected how I viewed the first performance. However I decided to give it a chance at least, I tried to keep an open mind.
David Stifel is a decent narrator, kind of - his performance with this book - just doesn't do it justice. He basically just reads the story, and throws his voice for other characters. I actually enjoy his "Scottish" accent of one of the characters. There's a sense of him almost falling asleep reading this. Like it's boring him, and he has zero enthusiasm for any of it.
As for the story.
*Spoiler* - They go out and find an old starship and bring it back to earth. <- That's basically the content of the whole 13h 49m, It was a slog. A few things happen while out on their adventure. He finds and recruits a team of misfits and angry people and tries to pull them together on his quest to save everything from an overpowering foe. Meh, it was a slog. The characters did not bring the story alive to the point where I felt I cared about it at all.
Since I pushed through this book, I will probably give book two in the series a chance. I have had good experiences listening to books read by Mark before. So far it looks like the series (at the time of me writing this) has 13 books read by mark. They all seem to be rated fairly highly, so I don't want to write off a whole series just because the first book was a "slow start", to put it nicely.
Give the book a shot. David has a clean soothing voice. After listening to this book once and knowing the story. This is the kind of book you put on, when you have a 13 hour road trip or plane flight (please don't drive or operate heavy machinery while listening to him - you may fall asleep at the wheel and hurt someone). You can use this book to block out the noise around you, it's almost hypnotizing, sort of a "white noise" generator one can easily fall asleep to.

Hard listening
Story is kind of cliche and corny. But the worst part is the narrator. Oh my God is he bad. Really hard to listen to
