Story
Many of us feel trapped in a grind of constant change: rolling news cycles, the chatter of social media, our families split along partisan lines. We feel fearful and tired, on edge in our bodies, not quite knowing what has us perpetually depleted. For Katherine May, this low hum of fatigue and anxiety made her wonder what she was missing. Could there be a different way to relate to the world, one that would allow her to feel more rested and at ease, even as seismic changes unfold on the planet?

Story
Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself.

Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path.
Carrying only the essentials for survival on their backs, they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea and sky. Yet through every step, their walk becomes a remarkable journey.

What the critics say
"A beautiful, thoughtful, lyrical story of homelessness, human strength and endurance." (Guardian)
"The landscape is magical: shape-shifting seas and smugglers' coves; myriads of sea birds and mauve skies. It's a tale of triumph: of hope over despair; of love over everything." (Sunday Times)
"An astonishing narrative of two people dragging themselves from the depths of despair along some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country and ultimately finding themselves." (Independent)

Compelling story!
No one is immune from the misfortune that befell these two, but how many of us could face such a dire situation with similar grace! No sugar coating, just honest retelling of a trip and a transformation.

Interesting enough
The concept was a little more captivating than the actual story itself, but nonetheless, entertaining.

Ray narrates beautifully but it's better read
Raynor Winn tells the story of how, at 50 yrs old, she and her husband lose all of their material possessions, including their business. Homeless, and distraught, with no place to go, they decide to walk the 630 mile South West Coastal Path of England. An area that I previously knew nothing about, and that I now want to visit.
I didn't initially love this book. I started out listening to it on audio (narrated by the author), but after getting 3/4 through, my mind kept wandering. I knew that I was missing something important. I stopped and decided to wait until I could read it from the beginning. I decided to travel the journey. I googled images of many landmarks and towns, and I followed along on google maps. This could easily have been a picture book; there is so much geography, history and geology. When I read it, and as I learned more about the English coast, I truly connected with Ray and Moth. As I learned about every village and town, my reading trudged along, but it was a trip worth taking. If you read this book, don't read it too quickly, It's beautifully written; almost poetic and I think it's meant to be savoured.
The author paints amazing pictures of the landscape, but more importantly she vividly describes how they feel every day as they plod along. They start out feeling broken and old. She adds humor when it's appropriate and if you take your time to really walk with them, their galvanizing trek will stick with you and inspire you.
If you enjoy nature and want to learn and be inspired, then I highly recommend this book. Don't plan to rush through it though. Read it and make Google your friend.

Food for thought
I found this book quite challenging. Its an interesting story, at times hopeful, but also a bit depressing in the way it describes the reality of homelessness. I think perhaps I would have preferred to read the book because although the author's writing is very descriptive, I didn't find her reading performance to be engaging.

Uplifting Memoir infused with wry humour & pathos
I didn't realise it was a memoir. At the start of the book with its desperate scenario of Moth and Ray reeling from being losing their home and livelihood and then the next day hearing Moth's devastating diagnosis, I thought this was a heavy handed novel with way too much stacked up against the protagonist. The fact that this is a true story was to me more wild the path they took.
The prose is so descriptive you can hear the birds, the waves, the wind. Normally I fight shy of narrators reading their own books, but Raynor Winn (with her everso so slight lisp and natural country cadence) was an added bonus.
It is both heartbreaking and uplifting. A loving paean to both the South West Coast Path and her husband.

Tediously earnest
I could not relate to these people at all. The first three quarters of the story they were wet or hot or hungry or exhausted or thirsty and nearly always grubby & smelly. I only finished it because I hoped they would pull themselves out of their funk. Spoiler alert: they did, sort of
