Publisher's Summary

From number-one New York Times best-selling authors Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu comes the second book in the Eldest Curses series and a thrilling adventure for High Warlock Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood, for whom a death-defying mission into the heart of evil is not just a job; it’s also a romantic getaway. The Lost Book of the White is a Shadowhunters novel.

Life is good for Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood. They’re living together in a fabulous loft; their warlock son, Max, has started learning to walk; and the streets of New York are peaceful and quiet - as peaceful and quiet as they ever are, anyway.

Until the night that two old acquaintances break into Magnus’s apartment and steal the powerful Book of the White. Now Magnus and Alec will have to drop everything to get it back. They need to follow the thieves to Shanghai, they need to call some backup to accompany them, and they need a babysitter. Also, someone has stabbed Magnus with a strange magical weapon that is changing the very nature of his powers.

Fortunately, their backup consists of Clary, Jace, Isabelle, and newly minted Shadowhunter Simon. In Shanghai, they learn that a much darker threat awaits them. Magnus’s magic is growing unstable, and if they can’t stop the demons flooding into the city, they might have to follow them all the way back to the source - to the very realm of the dead.

the book itself is great... but not the narration

loved the story! But the narrator makes the characters we love sounds like whining teenager and, if the character is not American, he gives them a German accent. there's no German in the story. I would read it again, paperback.

Another great adventure

A good story though the different pronunciation of a few names were confusing at first. Alec sounding whinny and Jace sounding like a dumb surfer dude didn't match but it was minor.

Disgusting Whiney voices given to beloved characters.

Lovely book by Cassandra Clare. However, it’s bizarre that the narrator got the part to read out this book, given the distasteful negative portrayal of beloved characters in an attempt to undermine the story.

shake my head

the way the narrator pronounces some of the characters names drives me crazy like what in the world is he calling izzy and Alec's mother, and the accents are horrible

Not bad

The book was good the story line was good but the guy who did the Narrated of the book well im Sorry to but he sucked. It seemed to me that he has never read the other books to know what the characters sounds like how they act. It was really bad and disappointing maybe he should read all the books before doing this one. but he did sound like he could have done a great job. He just needs more work and to make sure he separates the character voices and not mixes them up

Good story but...

Cassandra Clare didn’t disappoint with this book focused on Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood. It was a bonus to have Jace, Clary, Isabelle, Simon and Ragnar Fell involved also. The “but” is in the performance. BD Wong’s interpretation of the characters really took away from the story for me. Jace comes across as a stoner surfer dude, Clary and Isabelle as shallow and air-headed and don’t even go there with Simon! I recommend the book but serious warning about the performance.

Entertaining but not the same quality as most Cassandra Clare books

Book is entertaining but not the same depth or quality as other Cassandra Clare books. Narrator is super annoying in this book as he makes the girls voices sound really dumb.

Story was excellent as always but.....

As always a great read. Lots of humor and again shows the length friendship will go for one another. The Bad--- The Narrator was horrible he made me cringe. He obviously did not read the series and had no clue how to be at one with the characters. His perception of the characters ruined the book. His dreary voice made all the heros of the book sound like brain damaged stoner surfers. I love her books and her writing but honestly folks the guy killed the book with his reading. Several times I almost gave up on the book because he made me cringe with every sentence to the point of pain. Again the book was filled with adventure, excitement and friendship a beautiful story. If you can get over the Narrator completely demolishing the voices then you will love and enjoy another shadow hunter book.

Love Magnus and Alec

Didn't love parts of the narration. Some of the accents, voices weren't quite there. I liked it in the previous book, but this one had more characters interacting at the same time. I did struggle a bit to finish it, but it was good in the end. Also, world, please stop interrupting Alec and Magnus!

Could have been better.

The performance wasn't the best. None of the Characters sounded like previous audio book recordings of thase exaxt same Characters. And when it came to the Female Characters of this story they didn't sound at all like they were Female. You could tell it was a guy reading a Female Characters' part, which was a terrible shame; this fact really, really detracted from the story. It also felt like the story could have been longer.
