About this listen
A dazzling novel set during the Great War and postwar Prohibition about a young nurse, a soldier, and a family secret that binds them together for generations to come—from USA TODAY and repeat #1 bestselling author Genevieve Graham.
Present day
Cassie Simmons, a museum curator, is enthusiastic about solving mysteries from the past, and she has a personal interest in the history of the rumrunners who ferried illegal booze across the Detroit River during Prohibition. So when a cache of whisky labeled Bailey Brothers’ Best is unearthed during a local home renovation, Cassie hopes to find the answers she’s been searching for about the legendary family of bootleggers...
1918
Corporal Jeremiah Bailey of the 1st Canadian Tunnelling Company is tasked with planting mines in the tunnels beneath enemy trenches. After Jerry is badly wounded in an explosion, he finds himself in a Belgium field hospital under the care of Adele Savard, one of Canada’s nursing sisters, nicknamed “Bluebirds” for their blue gowns and white caps. As Jerry recovers, he forms a strong connection with Adele, who is from a place near his hometown of Windsor, along the Detroit River. In the midst of war, she’s a welcome reminder of home, and when Jerry is sent back to the front, he can only hope that he’ll see his bluebird again.
By war’s end, both Jerry and Adele return home to Windsor, scarred by the horrors of what they endured overseas. When they cross paths one day, they have a chance to start over. But the city is in the grip of Prohibition, which brings exciting opportunities as well as new dangerous conflicts that threaten to destroy everything they have fought for.
Pulled from the pages of history, Bluebird is a compelling, luminous novel about the strength of the human spirit and the power of love to call us home.

My First Audiobook
I was sceptical about trying an audio book. I love to read but haven’t carved out much time so I decided to try. This book had been one I had picked up and put down a few times now, and I am so glad I listened to it. What a beautiful story!

Awesome history of Windsor and LaSalle
I love this book having grown up in Windsor. It was amazing to learn so much more about prohibition and World War I, including people who were from my hometown. I love this author, the way she writes the way she researches and brings history to life is just wonderful. I can’t wait to read more of her work.

The Narrator is Using American English for Canadia
I wanted to like this book, but the narrator is mispronouncing Canadian English and it matters. For example, the are no Lootenants in the Canadian Military. The rank Lieutenant is pronounced Leftennant. This matters. Canadian terms matter. You wouldn’t mispronounce Aussie or UK names to cater to Americans. Don’t do it to Canadian words.

Bluebird — big winner
First responders ( ie Bluebirds)are always highly valued — even more in wartimes — whether WW1– or even COVID or Ukraine etc. Adele is so strong — so human —whether in Europe during WW1, or ‘speak easy ‘ in Windsor.-

A Fine Read
This kept me coming back for more. The war scenes are horrific but there is never gratuitous violence and the Windsor place names were a treat for me, who visited Windsor in the 1970’s. Give me more by Genevieve Graham!

Canadian Historical Fiction
I like the way the author has woven fictional characters into Canadian history to make us aware of little known facts.

I’m raising a glass to Bluebird!
Living 45 minutes from Windsor Ontario, having moved a few years ago from the rum running province of Nova Scotia, I had no idea of the rich history and the foundation that Prohibition had on this area. Of course I’ve heard stories, but the detail in which Ms. Graham tells the story of Jerry and John was immensely interesting to me. As well, I was blind to Canada’s history in tunnelling during WW1. I am a big fan of dual timeline war novels and thoroughly enjoyed this tale from so close to where I live. I can’t wait to go down to Dominion House for a glass of whiskey!

Loved this incredible Story
I was captivated by the events and characters created from influences of Canadian History. It would be exciting to tour this area to see and feel the energy from over a century ago!

Awful - and I can't return it for credit
I was persuaded by reviews and the potential of an interesting story to use a credit on this book. The writing reminds me of an elementary school essay therefore the narration had very little to work with.
If you prefer well-written / well-performed literature do not purchase this book.
