Bought it for a friend because it was her first book. I have read every book Lisa Gardner ever wrote - never disappointed.
Oh my God, this book brings back memories of classic style murder mysteries, it just keeps getting better and better, the more you read. A sudden evening visit by an ambitious reporter at the Stokes family mansion, turns adopted Melanie Stoke's blissful world upside down. Shocked by the reporter's insinuations about the family she has loved, ever since being adopted twenty years ago, she urgently needs to uncover the truth, find out who she really is. Unable to remember anything from her early childhood, Melanie is soon thrust into a nightmare, where danger lurks around every corner, as long buried family secrets threaten to come to the surface. A brilliant, suspensful mystery thriller, with nerve shattering moments, especially near the end. With twists and surprises it will appeal to all, especially to women. This author has just become one of my favourites.
This story was full of surprises and is everything I could wish for in a good mystery - an original story, a lead character who you can sympathise with, plenty of activity going on in each chapter and keeps you guessing.
Melanie Stokes has known she was adopted by her family at the age of nine, although she has no recollection of her first nine years of life. She also knows that her family lost their daughter Meagan to a brutal murder. But twenty five years later, Melanie is given a bombshell that makes her doubt where she came from and the people she calls family. It has so many twists - some of which you really can't see coming - and it is easy to get caught up and not wish to put it down. When I had to put the book down I could not wait until the next opportunity to pick it up.
An excellent read and I shall be looking out for more of the author's works.
This is the first book in years that I actually could not finish. Started off great and had the makings of a great story! I faltered at about 29% and gave up at 34%. I just stopped and said NO life is to short. I was actually relieved and could not wait to start another book I had downloaded on my kindle (another great thing about owning a kindle!) The story got so boring and the characters did not get into my head. When I left it down I had to go over the last few chapters to remember what I had been reading. Too much conversation with nothing happening!I did not even go to the end of the book to see what happened because "I DONT CARE' The biggest disappointment was when I looked back and noted that I had paid around 5 Euro for it!!! Money for old rope!
Could not put this book down the hook at the beginning was gripping and kept you guessing and wanting to know the answers.. A man is put to death for killing six children, whilst a nine year old girl is left in ER who doesn't know who she is, twenty years later we are now thrown into the heart of a family about to fall apart, but how is everything linked together? Not the way I was expecting. They are slowly turning on each other, suspecting each other for things they may or may not have done and the twists and turns keep coming until the end. When you think you know who the girl in ER was and is , she might not be, what has the family done? It will shock you what they did and who. Very well plotted and fast paced. Great characters and a good telling of the pain of each character bringing some sort of understanding to their actions.
Reviewing books on Amazon is always quite difficult. I've gone with three stars for this, but if I was able would probably have preferred 3 and a half... The good: It rolls along at a rapid rate, and I didn't want to put it down. It has that great thing going where you're trying to second guess the twists as you read, and it's not so stupid or convoluted that you could do so! The not so good: It's all a bit unlikely, with a suspension of belief needed. Gaps in the plot are overlooked, and actually having finished it I don't especially feel like I know any of the leading characters. So, in summary, if you get it cheaply, and are happy to go with the flow (think Stephen Seagal movies for example) for a bit of pure entertainment, then buy it. Otherwise there are probably better things out there.
