Mairaj U. Syed grew up in Allen Texas to immigrant parents who came to the U.S. in 1979. Though he most enjoyed the study of history, philosophy, and literature, he pursued a practical degree in college, graduating with a degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Texas at Austin. After working for three years as a data network consultant, he decided to go back to school to pursue a PhD in Islamic Studies. In 2011 he obtained a PhD from Princeton University's department of religion. In 2017, he published his first book on the problem of coercion in Islamic legal and ethical thought. He is currently an assistant professor in the department of religious studies at the University of California, Davis. His research explores the history of Islamic legal and ethical thought, particularly areas dealing with public law, family law, and politics. He is also interested in the development of hadith literature and the social network that transmitted and preserved it in the first 250 years of Islamic history.
