So when she suddenly goes missing on All Gallows' Eve, I'm first to raise the alarm. My mum used to say this village was built on the roots of The Gallows Tree, that they're underneath the ground, under all of our houses. It used to scare me as a kid. Thick, snaking roots squirming under me. No matter how far you ran, they could tunnel after you.

Story
Mythical antiquity collides with a near-future cyberworld as The Oracle’s unassuming hero and his FBI partner race against time to dismantle the Delphians’ murderous blockchain software. Theirs is a whirlwind tale of oracles ancient and modern, vanished antiquities and conjured crypto billions, cybercriminals and digital idealists—narrated by a cynical hero normally more concerned with dark chocolate than the consequences of the technologies he’s pioneering. What happens when the crypto ideals of privacy and truth might cost human lives—especially your own?

Cass Neary made her name in the 70s as a photographer embedded in the burgeoning punk movement in New York City. Her pictures earned her a brief moment of fame. Thirty years later she is adrift, on her way down, and almost out when an old acquaintance sends her on a mercy gig to interview a famously reclusive photographer who lives on an island in Maine. A hard-living female sleuth who stands alone
Former punk rock photographer Cass Neary does her best to be unlikeable, and it’s the genius of Elizabeth Hand that makes this drifter-turned-unwilling-detective impossible to resist. In the kickoff book to Hand’s crime series, Neary is aimless in the Big Apple—until she gets the opportunity to travel ''down east'' to the wilds of Maine to interview a reclusive photographer. What she finds up there would make the rest of us turn and flee, but Cass is one tough cookie…and completely unforgettable. Stick around for books two and three in the series: Available Dark, and Hard Light.

Story
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Best book I’ve read in years

Narrative nonfiction that breaks the silence
''Watch the children until I come back.'' This is the last thing Jean McConville says to her eldest son before being ''disappeared'' by the Irish Republican Army in 1972. The secrecy following McConville's abduction and murder and its lifelong, devastating effects on her 10 children acts as the backdrop of Say Nothing, an essential account of the brutal sectarian conflict that tore apart Northern Ireland for 40 years.
With the depth of a history book and the pacing of a true crime nail-biter, Keefe's excellent storytelling gives overdue recognition and justice to all those silenced during ''the Troubles.''

Even the deepest secrets can be uncovered
This was the perfect listen for my significant other and I as we road-tripped for four and a half hours and back to see his family. He loves mysteries and crime, and I love stories with a strong female lead, so this was a great cross-section of our interests. It was great for two people to listen to, because we would pause and discuss our theories as the story went along. We even sat in the living room together for the last hour to finish because we just HAD to know how it ended!

A good read
- By Nikki on 2023-01-08
Devoted tale of kindness and unknown friendship.
There's the old saying that a friend will help you move, but a real friend will help you move a body. This is an above average story exploring the latter. A lonely math nerd comes to the aid of a single mother and her teenage daughter. The story pulls you along, forcing you to compete with the characters as they practice their deception or those seeking the truth. I spent the first few chapters (if not half the story) trying to decide which character was my hero only to conclude each had their own integrity, values and redeeming qualities. This is not your typical crime mystery - it's so much more. I greatly enjoyed it and hope you do too.

Story
Lucie Blackman - tall, blond, 21 years old - stepped out into the vastness of Tokyo in the summer of 2000 and disappeared. The following winter, her dismembered remains were found buried in a seaside cave. The seven months in between had seen a massive search for the missing girl involving Japanese policemen, British private detectives, and Lucie’s desperate but bitterly divided parents. Had Lucie been abducted by a religious cult or snatched by human traffickers? Who was the mysterious man she had gone to meet? And what did her work as a hostess in the notorious Roppongi district of Tokyo really involve?

Instantly engrossing.
I had seen a review of this (book) from a friend and decided to get it on Audible. I was instantly hooked into the story from the first moment. What sets this apart from the traditional true crime book is the way the story is told from several different perspectives, based on interviews with friends, family and acquaintances of the victim, but also acquaintances and family of the perpetrator. It ends up being both a chronological story of a crime, its investigation, and the trial and a character study of many of the most prominent characters, not just the victim. It also presents a portrait of the difference between Japanese and British/American world views about crime, justice, society, and family. It really was almost impossible to stop listening once I started, and I highly recommend it if you're looking for an engrossing listen. The narrator, who I have heard on several other audiobooks, was excellent.

Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.
