    • The 2019 Canada Reads Winner Shines in Audio
    • This memoir is an emotional and touching recollection of one man's experience in the concentration camps during World War II, and the uphill battle he faced after liberation in 1945. Luck, chance, and a persistent hope carried Max Eisen through one of the most horrifying periods in human history. His shocking story will gut you, then bring you hope as he finds his way in the world in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Narrator Douglas E. Hughes delicately takes on Eisen's story, embodying Eisen's spirit of honesty and hope. Hughes skillfully navigates the pronunciations of Hungarian words, lending an authenticity that elevates Eisen's story to the next level.

    • What comes after the Long Winter?
    • The second installation in The Long Winter series dives right back into a world decimated by the alien Grid hell-bent on destroying Earth to harvest its natural resources. The situation is bleak – the remaining humans are dispersed amongst a few conglomerate colonies with tenuously friendly relations, and the Grid is back. James and Emma return to the forefront of the ongoing battle for human survival, and they make many difficult decisions that will impact their new family. Dual narrators Edoarado Ballerini and Amanda Leigh Cobb return to embody James and Emma, who are forced to make nearly impossible decisions that pit their love for their family against their responsibility to protect the human race. As always with A.G. Riddle, unexpected twists and turns await, and this will leave you longing for the conclusion of this post-apocalyptic world.

    • A Sci-Fi Adventure Mystery Mashup
    • Take one part sci-fi, one part mystery/thriller, and one part adventure, and you've got The Salt Line. In this post-apocalyptic world, a group of seemingly unrelated strangers pays an exorbitant amount of money to leave the safety of their ''zone,'' which protects them from the threat of deadly tick bites. As they venture into the wilderness that has grown uninterrupted by human hands, they discover that what they have been told about their protective zones might be much more complicated than they ever believed. This is a wild journey through the wilderness, punctuated by secrets, bribery, and murderous plots, and I highly recommend it for anyone from the sci-fi fiend to casual fan.

    • A deeply moving memoir
    • Heather B. Armstrong is the best at everything she tackles — she's the best at getting her blood drawn, she's the best at running, and she's also the best at unwillingly resisting traditional depression treatment. She has lived nearly her whole life with a monster that threatens to destroy her life, an ever-present wish to be dead. Once she is invited to join a radically experimental clinical trial, she leaps at the chance to become the best at that — the best at being dead.

The treatment involves being placed in a medically induced coma — essentially brain-dead — 10 times. The goal is to reset her brain back to factory settings, without the crippling depression that impacts every aspect of her life. This is an incredibly emotional, heart-wrenching, and personal memoir about one woman's quest to take back her life. Heather narrates like she's baring her soul to a close friend, and it's hard not to feel overcome with emotion when her voice breaks as she relives her darkest moments. This book is the reason authors often perform their own memoirs — each crack in Heather's voice brings you that much closer to her, and that much more invested in her story.

    • We're not alone…but who else is out there?
    • I am a huge A.G. Riddle fan, especially when paired with the magical voice of Edoardo Ballerini, and Winter World was no exception to my adoration. Edoardo does an incredible job of embodying the charming robotics doctor who finds himself imprisoned for reaching too far into the future, and teams up with Amanda Leigh Cobb for a dual narration experience that is truly out of this world.

There are aliens, spaceships, robots, drones, and even a little bit of love packed into a non-stop adventure that you won't want to end (which is perfect, since there will be a second novel in this series). Riddle is adept at blending the mystery and adventure of a thriller with the intrigue and imagination of a classic sci-fi novel, and I just can't get enough. Dive into this winter space odyssey, and you'll be hooked by his captivating style of storytelling.

    • An unmatched audio experience
    • From start to finish, I was addicted to this book. A multi-cast performance done right can catapult the audiobook version of a novel into a whole new echelon of entertainment, and Daisy Jones & The Six is such an experience. I've always been a Jennifer Beals fan, and I'm so pleased she was chosen to voice Daisy; she does an incredible job of embodying a former superstar recounting her turbulent past of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. This fictional exposé of a band years after their breakup will have you so wrapped up in their story that you'll surely forget it isn't about a real musical act.

    • Everyone needs a kick in the ass from time to time
    • First of all, I'm not a traditional self-help reader, but I've heard so many great things about Mel around the office that I figured I'd finally give one a shot. Second of all, this isn't a traditional self-help book. This is a collection of life coaching sessions with an expert in the field, each with a new client with a different set of problems they want help addressing. Mel is truly skilled at drilling down to the source of an issue that someone is having, and really gets to the heart of the problem quickly. She is incredibly honest and grounded, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with her approach. Even if you don't identify directly with each person, you'll surely gain some insight into how you can take a look at your own life and identify areas where you could use a little help. Now that I've finished, I'm off to listen to the rest of Mel's books!

    • A voyeuristic observation of marital counseling
    • If you liked Esther Perel's Audio Show Where Should We Begin?, you will undoubtedly love this book. This is a fictional novel about marital therapy that takes you into the counselor's room, listening in on the back-and-forth between a separated couple seeking to improve their relationship, be it as a married couple or as divorced co-parents. I haven't been married, but I related very strongly to the ideas that both Gretchen and Steve held, of a marriage being ''right'' or ''wrong.'' It felt good to break free of that notion, and to view my own relationship and friendships in a whole new light. It's relatively short, but it packs a strong emotional punch that will stay with you after the last word.

    • An unbelievable tale based on a true story
    • Ever since I was little, I've always been intrigued by the horrors of the Holocaust, and have spent countless hours researching and learning all I could about it. This book was a no-brainer for me to read, and I'm so glad I did. It's almost impossible to believe that it was based on a true story of a survivor, and all of the little things that had to go right to bring him through to the end is absolutely chilling. Richard Armitage lends a truly expert performance to the title, bringing the listener deep into the psyche of Lale.

    • A quirky love story
    • Hazel is a quirky, animal-loving teacher who enjoys life to the fullest, with little regard to what other people think. In contrast, Josh Im is stoic, introspective, and even-keeled. Random run-ins during college painted a bit of a 'crazy' picture of Hazel, so when they meet again years later, Hazel is sure her only chance to be in Josh's life is to become his best friend. As they grow a friendship through shared double dating disasters, both start to wonder if these opposites just might attract. This is a delicious romance full of the warm and fuzzy feel-goods that every good romance story should have.

    • One of the biggest decisions you can make
    • When I began Motherhood, I hoped for the same things that the narrator did — that something, anything, would give me a sign. Should I choose motherhood, or a less conventional path?

While I feel no closer to making that decision for myself, I have felt a kindred bond to Sheila Heti and her narrator in a way that I haven't felt before from an author. She lets you into her truest self, opening up and bringing the listener deep into her reasoning over a decision that many modern women must wrestle with as the end of their childbearing years become visible on the horizon. Regardless of which direction you lean on the subject, you will undoubtedly connect with the level of care and concern that Heti takes in turning over the topic repeatedly in her character's mind. I have come away with a better understanding of my own struggle with the decision, and I'm hopeful it will similarly shed light on a difficult choice many women wrestle with.

    • A satisfying conclusion
    • The conclusion to The Extinction Files by A.G. Riddle did not disappoint. The duology opener, Pandemic, started with a relatively realistic concept that took a sharp turn into international conspiracy, plunging the listener into a secret society hell-bent on creating the perfect world.

Pandemic left us with many unanswered questions, but Genome delivered answers with a combination of science fiction, action, and historical fiction, making for a delicious finale.

    • A de-motivational riot
    • Many celebrities share tales of years and years of hard work before it started to pay off, but this is not that type of memoir. If you’re a fan of adult-geared cartoons, you’ve probably heard H. Jon Benjamin’s iconic voice before, as the star of Archer and Bob’s Burgers. While short, this audiobook is jam-packed with Benjamin's tales of woe, from his failure to have a successful sleepover to his failure to graduate from college with his intended degree. Despite finding his way onto two wildly successful shows, the multihyphenate entertainer manages to keep failing at being a celebrity.

    • Honesty is the only policy
    • No matter your political opinion of James Comey, this audiobook is brilliant. Comey recounts his career from his early days as a prosecutor in New York City through to the final days of his shortened term as the Director of the FBI. Travel behind the scenes of the United States government as Comey details investigations into NSA wiretapping, enhanced interrogation techniques, and — of course — Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

As a narrator, Comey delivers a stellar performance; he makes you feel like you're listening to him over drinks in his study by a roaring fire. If Comey is still looking for his next role, he sure sounds right at home in the recording booth.

    • The audiobook that got me hooked on listening
    • While I had been listening to audiobooks for a while, I didn’t really get HOOKED until I listened to Pandemic by A. G. Riddle. It was a daunting book to start at nearly 19 hours, but by the 17th hour I was wishing I had another 17 left. It’s chock full of suspense, medical thrill, mystery, and conspiracy, plus it’s read by the incredibly talented Edoardo Ballerini. What starts as a rapidly spreading fatal outbreak spirals into something much bigger than any of the characters could have possibly envisioned. There’s history, science, advanced technology, and loads of excitement to keep you gripping your armrests up until the very end. tktktk
