There have been parts of lockdown that I secretly fitted into better than what used to be normal life, and this gem of a book captured that sense beautifully. A spring when the weather was strangely beautiful, the air was peaceful and new ways had to be forged and appreciated. Which is what Gemma did even as she stumbled drunkly through the cottage door.
I loved Gemma as a smart and warm hearted woman (even though she needed shouting at to see sense occasionally) and I loved the rural landscape and mentally moved into the cottage and the barn with their covetable interiors.
I especially enjoyed a book with a dog as a main character who remains happy and healthy - in fact she thrives. All books should take note.
