The more and longer we fast - the blessed we are are...you know what I mean!!
Here's a fasting book that covers everything, a combination of spiritual and physical guidance. Buhner is such a poetic master in the delivery of whatever information he offers - a feast on all levels!

This book is badly outdated. I would no longer consider a water fast for longer than 5 days. Science has shown the physiological damage that can occur when there is no nutrient intake for extended periods. There's lots of information about it online now.
I've fasted for up to 3 weeks on several occasions. The author makes a lot of unsubstantiated claims that I have not experienced:
-Fasting brings us close to death. -Fasting begins with the decision to suffer and ends with being in harmony with the universe. -Deep fasting always involves suffering. -With fasting we make the choice to intentionally engage the darkness. -Considering a fast confronts us with a powerful journey of the soul. -Fasting always brings up issues of trust and intimacy. -Fasting brings up fears and thoughts of unresolved emotional complexes. -During fasting we confront our most basic fears about love. -Anger is an essential emotional component of fasting. There are few difficult things in life that we do not need anger to help resolve. (Huh?) -Grief is nearly always a part of fasting. -Most of us have been taught to denigrate our bodies. -The body has sophisticated mechanisms for deciding what food it wants to eat. (The author claims the body will be more selective in what food it wants to consume after a fast. If he means the body will want fat and sugar to regain the weight it lost then I agree.) -Fasting will allow nature to show you your true destiny. (The author claims the spirits in nature will mystically know what your destiny is.)
I eventually grew tired of underlining the authors dubious claims. If you have unresolved emotional issues find a support group or a therapist. Going into the wilderness to fast without support could possibly worsen your mental and/or physical state.
A week ago I received this book in the mail and promptly set about reading it. The writer deals here with the "way to spiritual, physical, and emotional enlightenment." I have a number of books on fasting, but as well prepared as this one. It just 'spoke to me.' If you are concerned about your health or your spiritual path, get this book and read it...you will like it.
5.0 out of 5 starsBrilliant book on fasting - Start planning your fast!!

Really excellent book. I have Dr Fuhrman's book, which focuses more on the physical aspects of a fast.
Full details on how to perform a fast are provided, though for long fast you are recommended to have medical supervision.
But Buhner's book, goes more into emotional and spirit, inners self aspects These I am very interested in. I had very high blood pressure a few years ago , and underwent a 27 day water fast at True North in California, and this dropped my pressure to normal. Though at that time during the fast, I distracted myself by watching YouTube, read books etc. Now, (and I am planning another fast), I would pay attention to Buhner's recommendations, to carefully watch your experience, almost like you were sitting in a dessert, with no other companions except the wind on the dunes and canyons.

Excellent book!!! I got the paper and the kindle copy. The best book I have read about Fasting so far. Scientific and spiritual, very detailed and informative. You'll find interesting historical facts about fasting as well as a full report of what occurs in your body and mind every day during fasting, which helps you to understand and appreciate the benefits of this ancient practice.
excellent , fully comprehensive , carefully worded guide to fasting. it provides insight on various aspect that points out how to optimise the benefits and how to avoid mistakes associated with longer fasts. if you contemplate venturing into a fast , this is the one to read first , if you are in a fast , read it to see how to make the most of it , how far you want to stick with it and how to transition back to consuming food in a safe way.

I never get round to actually writing a review, this book is a worthy exception. I'd been looking for this type of book for a long time, and was blown away to find it. A mixture of practical advice, inspiring quotes from Mystics, poets and spiritual teachers and grounded information. Essential reading for anyone looking to undertake a wilderness fast or vision quest.

An easy to read book which makes fasting sound logical and easy . It encouraged me to immediately start and I was able to continue without a battle. Buhner addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of fasting which makes it sound very sensible. Must admit I skipped some bits here and there. I could have done with more recipes but they are widely available .
