"Giovanni's Room" is a book about the human need for connection and intimacy. It is also a book about the obstacles to such intimacy and how the ends that people will go to overcome it and the consequences that this can have and them and others. The most affecting portion of this novel for me was the interlude with Sue. David, the protagonist, uses her simply to fulfill his need for human intimacy. Sue knows that he is using her but participates in David's charade because of her own similar need. Each is sincere in their need but insincere in the consequences. Both use the act to find intimacy while knowing that it will only further their isolation.
This is a novel about the cruelty that people can bring into the world. It is a novel of the indifference of each to the other while each searches for connection to another.
