Mr. Molles is one of my favorite authors. He keeps the story interesting and ready does a nice job developing characters in his books. That being said, I felt this like was one of the least interesting and certainly the most useless Novella in "the Remaining" series. I am writing this without any concern for the lack of pages and the high price for this short story. I feel like his writing is certainly worth a couple dollars but this story (as many have indicated) has put me off of this "novella" idea from other authors that I might have wanted to read more from. It really only hurts "The Remaining" brand by upsetting loyal readers enough that when Book 5 rolls around it might not be all that well received.
To be honest, I can already say I'm a chump and will certainly jump at the chance to read the next Book (not Novella) that comes out. Luckily I bought the last book and plan to read it once more before that new book comes out (as it appears I still have numerous months to wait).
So, now to discuss the actual novella a bit, I found myself hoping it was an actual character in "The Remaining" series and not just some nut case that ends up working for "God's Army". It could have gone in so many directions and instead it was just a guy that you feel sorry for (like the guy in "Meet the Parents") and hope that somehow it will work out alright in the end. Even though we all know this is a story about horrible times and it doesn't seem like it is going to improve. Evidently we are to hate this character enough so that when he gets taken out in the fifth book it won't be so harsh. I found myself hoping the baby would survive and have some sort of mutation that was the cure for the zombie situation (yeah, now you know why I'm not writing the books!)
Eh, regardless, it's been a fun couple of books (minus the two novellas) and I look forward to seeing where it goes next - I have to believe it will get better in a full length book!
This is another one of those way short stories where it should have been free. I understand about introducing new characters but all this was is a way to introduce a new character. And even the way the story unfolded, I feel it did not belong in the whole storyline.
I feel that we were intentionally lead to purchase this believing this was a continuation. $3 is not alot of money but for the price, we should have gotten way more.
All in all, for those who are reading "the remaining" series, you can avoid this story and still be fine. I recommend to stay away from this particular story.
Such a shame since all of the other previous stories in this series has been pretty good.
I've been a big fan of D.J. Molles for a long time and have read every book in his series. I didn't love this novella, but I did like it. My rating has nothing to do with the length. I knew it was short when I purchased it but figured it would be worth the $2.99 just for the entertainment it would provide. I chose to give this short book four stars instead of the five I have always given Molles' books. Why? I didn't like the story as much as his others. I found the characters unlikable and whiny. Molles' writing style, however, is impressive and he knows how to keep my attention. If you're a fan of this series and don't mind paying the $2.99 for it, I think it's worth it. If you don't want to spend $2.99 for this SHORT book, don't.
While I have been a great fan of D.J. Molles, and love his writing style, narrative voice, and am very much enjoying this series, I am very disappointed in the length of these "novellas". What I really feel like I'm doing here is buying an entire book one chapter at a time. I read the last two in less than an hour each (heck, I've read samples longer than this). This wouldn't even be so bad if we didn't have to wait months for the next one. A good hard cover book will cost $20.00, and I'm not opposed to paying that, so I'm not griping about the price. It's the "chapter" at a time idea that I'm not liking. If I'm going to get chapbooks (and these are shorter than a chapbook) , at least keep them coming at a rate that I haven't already forgotten how the last one ended. I won't be buying the rest of these. It's too frustrating. Finish your set of chap books, if that's your bag, and publish them all at the same time. I would have bought them all. Sorry D.J. You've lost a customer.

I was a little hesitant at first to buy another novella in the remaining series. Especially after the first few reviews I read were so bad but I bought it anyway and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the story. D.J. Models is fast becoming one of my favorite authors and if you have read the other books in the series you can see what this novella is doing. Yes, I was disappointed that it is such a short story but it is a good one. I'm sure we will see the main character again in book 5. If you are a fan of "The Remaining" series, then this is a must read. Very well done Mr. Molles. Now get to work and finish book 5... We're waiting..
