Survival…that’s what it has been all about since the EMP. Forstchen has allowed one full year to pass since the events of One Second After; yes, you must read book one before embarking on the journey in One Year After.

The first book in the series was about getting by, surviving and coming together. The second is more about control and deception – an us and them scenario. The townsfolk of Black Mountain have made it through the worst that the apocalypse could throw at them; many were lost, but now they are beginning to get their feet on the ground.

One Year After really touches on the big picture. How does the utopia that John has helped to build fit into the dystopia that America has become? Without the communication technology that we rely upon, who is running the show? Should they?

As with the first book, One Year After bleeds red, white and blue. I don’t mind that, but at certain times it does come off as a bit preachy.

I enjoyed getting back together with the characters, to see what has happened in their lives, how they have grown and evolved. Forstchen created a diverse group of individuals that kept me connected to the story. I would have preferred a more intelligent villain, someone who could better appreciate what the people of Black Mountain had accomplished, one that worked with them instead of against them. Then again, if that had been the case, he wouldn’t have been the villain and the story would have been a moot point.

The After Series is terrifying in that it really could happen. Forstchen has delivered a grim prospect of how all the chips could fall.

2.0 out of 5 stars Damaged

I bought all three in this series and they all arrived with varying degrees of damage; from spine cracks to scuffs to torn pages. I love these books and was very excited for them to get here, but they’re beat up. Every paperback I buy from Amazon seems to arrive in similar fashion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sticky book

This review is not about the book, but about the condition I received it in. Part of the book was covered in slimy, sticky stuff (glue?) I was able to clean it off the cover but it stained the pages slightly. Not fun! :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Scary Stuff...could this happen under the Trump Administration?

Sure makes you think about what might happen to North America in the event of an EMP....it all seems a little more real during this "Trump" administration. Scary stuff.

Really enjoyed this second book in the series.

Good read in continuation from the first book, thank you. I hope this series never comes true for I believe this will play out almost to the letter in the US.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would like to see a movie based on this trilogy

Very well written. Would like to see a movie based on this trilogy, but as it is culturally solid, pro-gun and patriotic, something tells me that Hollywood is probably not interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of a great trilogy of books

I bought all three of the books in this seires, One Second After, this one and The Final Day after reading the reviews on Amazon. I have to say that I was not disappointed and that all three books tell a story of what could easily happen if society lost all its electric & electronic equpment. One of the phrases in the books that has stuck in my mind is that we currently live in just about the most fragile society mankind has ever lived in and that, in most Westernised socities today, we are totally dependent on a very complex supply and infrastructure system and Heaven help us if anything major happens to all of that. A series of books well worth reading and totally unputdownable!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not living up to expectations

Despite being a huge fan of the genre, and in particular 'One Second After', I was slightly disappointed by this sequel. I remember having a much better relationship with the characters in the first book than this one, it has slipped slightly into the cliched gun nut survivalist and I wonder whether current issues in the USA around gun laws is causing Mr Forstchen to over state the point a fraction. He certainly isn't the only author in the genre to be doing this currently. That said, once the first 1/3 or the book is through, the remainder improves a lot and the story is paced well. It has left me in a bit of a quandary about whether I will be buying the third installment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Struggling on

Whilst this doesn't hit the heights of One Second After, this is still enjoyable. Set two years later (for the non initiated the first novel takes place over one year), the USA is still in a state of disarray. In fact, the whole world is in a state of disarray. John Matherson is having to be diplomatic whilst calling up his military skills, being ex-forces. A realistic picture of what might happen in the fallout of EMP weapons. If you liked One Second After then this sequel is recommended.
