3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Quick Read

It’s not as quick as a short story but "When We Were Worthy” is perfect for a plane ride, a day on the beach or a road trip. The subject is a good one & Marybeth Mathew Whalen does a fairly good job of juggling 4 main storylines & a number of participating characters but it all seems a bit simplistic.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not a bad book & I definitely will read more by Whalen but it didn’t rock my world. But. I have no doubt that one of her books definitely will!

4.0 out of 5 stars A modern Payton Place
Reviewed in Canada on July 20, 2019
Many many years ago, I read Payton place and loved the view into people’s lives and thoughts and the hypocrisy of a small town where everyone knows everything about everyone else, and if the don’t, they make it up.

This book gave me the same feel as that book.

A story about how easy it is to only see what you are shown, not what it really is.

Good book.

This book really too bad. It made me think that life is short. And we really need to appreciate it more.

2.0 out of 5 stars kept me hooked!

three dead cheerleaders and a town full of secrets, what isnt there to get excited about?...but very quickly (after the first 4 chapters) things start to get abit stale and the story starts to drag abit. I wanted to keep reading purley to get to the end and find out what the "big secret" was but it was more of a chore then excitment. That said, the town of worthy was written about in such a way it came alive. I could see the school and stooges bar and the characters homes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Ms. Whalen Book is a Winner - This is No Exception

Ms. Whalen is the most amazing authoress. Every one of her books is a winner. Her descriptive powers are accurate, imaginative and most impressive and her command of the English language is outstanding. She write evocatively and captivates the reader from page one. Her characters are so utterly convincing and her stories stay with me long after the last page is read. I've now read everything she has written and await eagerly her next masterpiece. Thank you, Ms. Whalen.

1.0 out of 5 stars ARE YOU SERIOUS, Marybeth Mayhew Whalen?????

I understood when I purchased this book that I was choosing a book that would not be literary and was clearly "Woman's Fiction". So, my expectations were not high. Sometimes I find myself straying from my TBR list when something listed as a "best of" catches my eye. This book has an interesting hook. It is no spoiler to reveal that it is about a carload of cheerleaders who are killed in a car accident when hit by a male student from their high school. There were many ways this story could have gone had it been written with a modicum of nuance. It was not. There was not one character that even came close to being developed. No history was given to this array of stereotypes. The book is written like a newspaper article written by a folksy house wife. I have not suffered through anything as abysmal in years. It is just a boring and silly attempt at a book.

If you find yourself compelled to buy this piece of flotsam anyway....please keep in mind that it is actually a "Young Adult" selection. The arc of the story is enough to make any adult sick to their stomachs. There are several different women who are going through life events that this author obviously finds compelling. She attempts to resolve each woman's issue and fails miserably with each of them. I was so bored that I actually considered not finishing it which is something I have not done since being as silly, and insipid as one of Ms. Whalen's empty headed high school characters. Just terrible. Please take my advise and do not waste your money on this boring drivel.

1.0 out of 5 stars This could have been a great book. It wasn't

Spoilers.
This could have been a great book. It wasn't. Parts of it poorly thought out. Certainly blood would have been drawn from the three deceased girls, yet much was made about the parents covering up evidence of their drinking before the accident. How was it that the teacher was hugging the football player while the game was being played? Why wasn't he on the field? He went on to play college ball, so he had to have been one of the best on the team. I doubt he smelled like leather and laundry detergent. Football players smell really bad when playing. Finally.. that ending. Omg. Felt like the author was tired and wanted the book done. Took just two paragraphs to wrap up the storyline on the football players. To write that Leah had consented blows my mind. She was bullied, intimidated, threatened and yes, raped. To wrap up this part of the book that the boys apologized with their coaches and parents beside them is ridiculous. How do you apologize for rape? This is one author I won't read again.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you liked "The things we wish were true"

If you liked "The things we wish were true", you'll most likely like this book. This book is basically TTWWWT with a different "accident" that intertwines the characters in the story. Same type of small town, same gossip mill, same chapters dedicated to different points of view, etc.

The author basically took a skeleton outline and plugged in different plots. It's a good book, and I enjoyed it, however I felt like I was reading a book I had already read.
