The writing style is a bit shallow I thought. Much of the content was overlay descriptive of logistical stuff while not creating the depth in the characters that makes a reader involved in the story.

I really enjoyed how the author created a fae society that fit within and under contemporary society. Being Canadian, I definitely appreciated the setting (although I do not appreciate that much snow). I found Jason to be a relatable character and followed his growth and self-realization through this novel with much interest. The author threw a few heavy hints about Jason's background here and there, and those have me wondering what the author will reveal later in this series. I think that fans of Diana Pharoah Francis or Patricia Briggs will find this series enjoyable.
Interesting characters, and a plot that twists and turns kept me reading straight through. The politics and intrigue was well balanced by the constant ratcheting of the action. There are some familiar tropes here, but they're executed well.
As someone who lives in Calgary, I have to say well done. The location and characters are well-written, and the author avoids the common fantasy plot pitfalls. He doesn’t rely on things like Mis- and no-communication to drive 7 chapters of plot points. Each event contributes well to an overall arc and his characters are reasonable people acting reasonably given their situations.
But you lose a point because there are no rats in Alberta!

Really enjoyed the book and wavered between a 3 or 4 star rating for a while. I eventually settled on 3 which shouldn't diminish this books appeal to others as there are brief moments of great storytelling. Overall though it is very enjoyable but doesn't step across that line to being great. If you like stories of the fae, in a slightly teen action type tale then you will truly enjoy this. Throw in shape shifters, vampires and other breeds from folk tale, place them in a modern setting with guns and a slightly different take on those who honour Merlin's legacy and it all makes for an interesting mix.
I wasn't sure what to expect as I had all but stopped reading books in this genre. However, I was hooked from the first few pages and this book did not disappoint. We're given an imperfect relatable hero who you're happy to root for. The story moved at a good pace; and even though it came to a satisfying conclusion, I can't wait to read the next book in the series to see where the story goes.

Not normally a great fan of fae stories but this was a really enjoyable one really liked the different characters. The plot was good and understandable. The central character is smart but not unusually so and has a couple of talents but nothing too formidable yet. I am looking forward to future episodes. Recommend you read this good book.
I'm loving the characters and story more as I read. As a big fan of Glynn Stewarts Starships Mage series I hesitated to read an Urban Fantasy series just in case I didn't like it. I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the next one as soon as I finish this review. Cheers!

It was a good read, and fast paced, if slightly too fast in my opinion with all the things happening with next to no trouble at all. However, I have to say, the last part of the ending felt a bit weak, as if the author was trying to make the main character more Harry Dresden than an original character. Other than that thoroughly enjoyable.
