4.0 out of 5 stars Poignant, touching, and sweet!

Every Time You Go Away is a tender, moving novel that takes you on a journey into the life of Willa Bennett as she learns how to cope with unexpectedly losing the love of her life, enduring the heartache involved in acknowledging and accepting the loss, surviving the grief, healing as a family, and learning to live again.

The prose is heartfelt and immersive. The characters are lonely, scarred, and endearing. And the story is an absorbing tale about life, loss, love, grief, familial drama, friendship, relationship dynamics, courage, parenthood, moving on, happiness, and first loves all interwoven with a thread of the paranormal.

Every Time You Go Away is another uplifting, beautiful tale by Harbison that reminds us that love is powerful and everlasting, and that life is precious and should always be lived to the fullest.

I love reading books by Beth Harbison when I need a funny, light-hearted rom-com, but this one was just okay for me, because I’m not even a little bit in to paranormal, ghost stuff. I would not recommend this book because of that component of the story. If you do like a romance where one of the main characters is long-dead, then this is for you. Otherwise, pass and read literally any other Beth Harbison book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Time You Go Away

I very much enjoyed reading Beth Harbison's most recent novel, "Every Time You Go Away". This character-driven novel is a quiet, yet profound story of a young widow's journey through grief one summer three years after her husband’s sudden death at their beach house. The limited list of characters helps keep the focus on Willa’s own character development. Essentially it is Willa, her 17-year old son Jamie, Willa’s best friend Kristen, and Kristen’s daughter Kelsey who are at the beach house—the main setting for the story. Except there is one more important character—Ben, Willa’s late husband, in spirit. Or is it just a hallucination?

Whether Ben is a real ghost or only a figment of Willa’s imagination is immaterial to the story because it is this essence of Ben that helps Willa move on, helps Willa work through the grief to the point of at least being OK. And as Willa finds herself again, she reclaims her relationship with her son Jamie, who has also been grieving. Jamie’s character develops in parallel to Willa’s as he reconnects with his childhood friend—Kelsey. “Every Time You Go Away” is truly a story of the cycle of life, of healing and moving on.

I liked the characters and real interactions. A little bit of "fantasy" and a lot of reality packed into a sweet story.
