2.0 out of 5 starsMediocre fantasy
Reviewed in Canada on May 25, 2021
Warning, some spoilers. Mediocre novel at best, was misled into believing it was an adult novel, but I agree with others that it is more young adult. Storyline was fairly dark, but with many plot holes. I did manage to finish it although I was losing interest near the middle. No explanation as to why she was kidnapped, why her mother was there and not her father and how the peasant boy was able to survive three times when he should have died. Her mother explained nothing to her, although she hinted at some deeper/darker reason a couple of times but no follow through. Sophia was seemingly randomly brought back to her home by the same trolls that kidnapped her. Loose ends were not tied off to my satisfaction. There were some characters and monsters that seemed to serve no purpose (Sphinx and dragon for example). Disappointed and would not recommend. Gave book away as soon as I finished reading, no desire to reread.

A spellbinding story of a fair and beautiful princess who has lost her mother finds herself in a terrifying world that urgently needs a queen in this thrilling fantasy novel. Her father, a warrior king, dies suddenly and she is left to take care of her castle and the village. A terrifying villain, Ares, is marching towards her castle and she has to be ready for him.
However, she doesn't realize that the beast are real; the ones she read about from her books: Reiper, Sphinx, Harpies, and all the other monsters with multiple arms, eyes, and lust to kill and torture. One day, her life is beautiful, and the next she is plunged into a dreamworld, a nightmare with all these beasts. And what's worse: she is supposed to marry one of them.

A great story by a great story teller. Lots of action, Harpies and monsters will not disappoint you. The attraction never goes away. You will love it.
This is a great book. I've had it two days and I'm halfway through it it is so good it's one of those books you can't put down. Usually I do not like books that are written with James Patterson and a co-writer.. However this is a great story and this woman is quite a spinner of tales. I understand that she has been a Ghost Rider for James Patterson and some of the children's books.
