4.0 out of 5 stars Good...

“I didn’t know how he was at preventing explosions, but the man sure knew how to cause one. I was going up in smoke. I was going up in flames. I was quite possibly going to die.”

The story seemed to drag on a bit, taking a long time to get to the main characters finally coming together. However, the description of when they were finally together was great... The ending was wrapped the story up nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speechless

This how my reading experience goes for Rosalind James books especially the last few. I read it once, way too fast, in one sitting with crumpled tissues all around me. Then I sigh and try to process all the big ideas and thoughts put into the book. About a week later I start re- reading the book and noticing all the little things I missed the first go around. What I love best are all these almost philosophical ideas the characters have about life and that is what makes each book so good we don't just see the relationship but we get to know each character intimately. This type of depth just sets Rosalind James so far ahead of other authors in the romance genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another "Must Get"
Reviewed in Canada on May 2, 2019
"Kiwi Rules" is, as usual, a more-than-five-star read from Rosalind James. This really beautifully told love story, set mostly in New Zealand, tells of Jax and Karen and their growing attraction to each other, their difficulties, uncertainties and past histories. A completely unexpected delight for me was that this Karen is the same one who made her first appearance in "Fierce," the first book of a terrific three-parter by Rosalind James called, "Not Quite a Billionaire," and I was completely captivated by her there and hoping that she would eventually get her own story. And here she is, just as intrepid, fearsomely honest, funny and clear-headed as before. As the story unfolds there are lots of sweet, touching moments, lump-in-throat moments and a lot that, again, might make one wish to visit New Zealand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Broke my heart
Reviewed in Canada on April 26, 2019
Broke my heart with the subject matter and the empathy, and then uplifted it. Thoughtful, deep and sexy read despite the adversity of both MC who come together just at the right time in their lives. It doesn't mean it's easy but the dynamic is totally intriguing. This author writes like an angel. She engages the reader and you're right there to the end. This could be you or me. And to get such a read with my KU subscription makes it even sweeter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great original start but becomes cliche and overlong.

This is a standalone romance novel with a HEA. I got about to the point where the couple give in to their feelings and 'sort of' have sex and thought that the story would be soon coming to an end but in fact I was only about 40% through! What had been an original story then fell into cliche mode- disapproving family members based on partial research into the significant others background, mistaking the hero's sister for his wife and the seemingly obligatory BDSM to cater for the 'Shades of Grey' audience. There were also chunks that became very dialogue heavy.
I appreciate that this is a New Zealand based book but one has to be wary of using so many Maori terms that it pushes the reader out of the flow of the story as they try to work out the meaning/significance. There may be a glossary at the end but one doesn't want to keep stopping reading the story to check the vocab.
At 80% I am beginning to just plough through this because I have spent so much time on it, not because I am enjoying it or care about the characters any more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story, not a fan of BDSM which brought the rating down for me

After her almost-fiance sells out their start-up business and shafts her in the process Karen Sinclair falls into a depression: no flat, no fiance, no job, new city. Only her big sister and brother-in-law manage to drag her out of the pit and persuade her to fly to New Zealand to inspect a high-end glamping business which her brother-in-law is thinking of buying.

Jackson 'Jax' MacGregor is a former model turned soldier, after a roadside bomb took his leg he has returned to New Zealand to recouperate. His heavily pregnant sister has asked him to act as tour guide for an American millionaire who may want to buy her high-end glamping business.

Jax and Karen first meet by accident on the beach Karen sees him emerging from the sea like some water god and then tries to rescue him from a group of teens who have stolen his crutches. Jax can't believe this aggressive American who seems intent on saving the poor cripple and turning an irritation into a full scale battle. Sparks fly in more ways than one until they realise they have been set up by their respective families.

As they tour some of New Zealand's most beautiful countryside and enjoy some of the athletic pursuits the country has to offer the intrepid explorer Karen and Jax gradually fall in love, but if he intends to return to his regiment and she intends to return to the US what future can they have? Is this just a holiday fling?

So, the rating is a mixture of two things. The characters and the plot which I really liked and get a solid four stars, and the BDSM stuff which I personally find off-putting and which spoilt the book for me. I don't object to BDSM per se but I don't understand why it seems to be an all or nothing kind of deal - kind of like they can't have sex any other way which isn't normal. I also felt that Jax was subconsciously compensating for the loss of his leg by being so dominant and ordering Karen around. I get that outside the bedroom Karen and Jax were equals but to me that's a bit like saying he only shouts at her in private - still not acceptable. Anyway, it is obviously an issue for me - others have said that it wasn't overdone and they didn't mind it - so I guess you assess your own views.

Otherwise, this book reads like a advert for holidays to New Zealand, full of amazing scenery, beautiful food, tons of sports, amazing local culture all wrapped around a romance between two strong characters who have been battered but not defeated by what life has thrown at them. Rosalind James is a great writer and her deep love of EnZed shows through every page, I loved Jax and Karen and their story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful first book in the New Zealand Ever After series

Karen Sinclair had a successful business in Philadelphia, a long term relationship, and all was looking good to expand their business. Until it wasn't. Abandoned by the man who Karen thought was her future life partner and also her business partner, Karen finds herself ousted by the new company who bought over her business and hung out to dry by her "love of her life".

Her brother-in-law, billionaire Hemi, from Rosalind James' Not Quite a Billionaire series, asks Karen to check out a business opportunity for him back in New Zealand, he wants to invest in a company but has no time to come and visit himself. Hemi's family have welcomed Karen into the family with warm arms, Koro (Hemi's Grandfather) especially. It's while Karen is in New Zealand that she encounters Jax.

Jackson (Jax) MacGregor is not long home from his military tour of Afghanistan with the New Zealand Defence Force. An enforced return home, as Jax was the victim of a truck bomb while on duty and had to have his left leg amputated below the knee. He's out swimming when he first meets Karen's gladiator face, she's a fierce lady with a definite competitive streak. It turns out it's Jax's sister Poppy who is selling her camp site business and needs Jax to help her out with the prospective buyer's inspections.

The banter between Jax and Karen is great, like sassy foreplay between the two of them. From the outset, underneath the continual friendly bickering, and almost rivalry, a heat begins to simmer amongst the pushing and pulling between them. Oh, they notice each other in a definite attraction way.

Karen goes on an adventure with Jax, examining luxury camp sites for her brother-in-law, Hemi. Jax finds out that Karen likes to do things for herself and is fiercely independent. The two of them spark off of each other in a delightfully competitive way and in among their adventure, Karen adopts a duck! However, in the throes of their adventure, a life or death situation develops for one of them and reality comes knocking.

They've both been through tough times, both have history and scars, both physical and emotional. Jax speaks to Karen of his time in Afghanistan, his internalising about losing his leg, it's a heart-wrenching read in places. The love scenes are emotional and very passionate, the connection absolute. Rosalind James' descriptions of New Zealand are, as always, superb. Her characters become dearly familiar to you, and as with all her books, you will be sad to say farewell to them at the end of their story (even Jax's Dad!). I highly recommend this first book in Rosalind James' new series, "New Zealand Ever After".

Kiwi Rules (New Zealand Ever After, Book 1) is a standalone M/F romance that takes place in New Zealand, although you will also meet characters from Rosalind James' "Not Quite a Billionaire" series. It is told from both the main characters' points of view and has a HEA.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful story

A lovely story! We first met Karen as a sixteen year old girl in Fierce, the younger sister of Hope, who had become Karen’s guardian when their mother died. Hope had only been eighteen then, and she had to give up all plans for college, and just work hard to keep them; then Karen got sick and they had no medical insurance. By then Hope had met, and was working for Hemi, a wealthy fashion designer, and they were having a very passionate, but on/off relationship. Nevertheless Hemi paid for Karen to be examined, and for the very expensive operation to remove the brain tumour that was threatening her life. Karen was a very bright girl, and very sparky, an opinion about everything! I have been hoping to read her story, and see how she grew up; she is approaching her thirtieth birthday when this story begins and has a wonderful job. She works in a company she part-owns, the world is her oyster! She is still the sparky, opinionated girl she ever was, well able to speak up for herself. By the end of the first chapter her life has fallen apart and she is hurting, badly. She moves back to New York to a small apartment, and is found there by Hope and Hemi, he offers her a lifeline, a research job for her to do in New Zealand, he is thinking about purchasing a company but doesn’t have the time to check it over before he buys, and he knows she will be honest about it. She will also be well looked after by his family, who she loves.

Also in the first chapter Jax finds his life torn apart, and he is living away from his family, although in a luxury apartment owned by his parents, trying to come to terms with a life that is going to be very different than he ever envisaged. They meet on the beach just after Karen arrives in New Zealand. There is an instant attraction between them but they are both very abrasive and argumentative, and sensitive. Karen keeps trying to save him, and Jax is determined to fight his own battles! They have to try and get on, it turns out that he is the person who will be showing her the business that Hemi is interested in purchasing; Karen had been expecting to meet his sister Poppy, and he was expecting to meet Hemi.

Various things occur in their travels that cause problems for them, not least Karen getting sick and panicking because she ends up in hospital. And when all seems to have settled down and they can both relax and think about having a life together - it seems that fate is determined to keep them apart! When they at last see each other again, after two very long weeks for both of them, their reunion is totally joyous, and the rest of the story is beautiful, tears of joy all round, me included! I have been looking forward to this book for ages and it was so worth waiting for! These characters feel so real, so alive, Rosalind James is so good at writing emotion you feel you really know these people.

A really good read!

Whew! Lots to talk about for Karen and Jax’s story and Rosalind James mines a deep seam of emotion, honesty, personal strength and fears.
I loved so many aspects of the book:
Karen’s honesty- no bottling it up, she comes out with it, so we don’t have to suffer through any unspoken misunderstandings nonsense.
She’s seriously clever, inventive, driven and guess what? Jax isn’t intimidated- unlike Josh, he doesn’t need to put her down to build himself up. Hope you really feel that long drop Josh...
Jax has a life altering adjustment to make after his injury and human curiosity isn’t always kind, but it’s always there, so he deals with it on his terms.
He’s strong, focused “seriously charming” to quote Karen and calm (except when he’s not and that’s worth the wait!)
Karen and Jax talk about their fears, he closes off - she gives him space, then calls him on it; she embarrasses him - he takes some deep breaths and sees past it.
There is wonderful, evocative scenic description- hear and feel those waves, wonder at the stars, taste that coffee and let that NZ balm wash over your soul.
Like the cover, the book is vibrant with colour , depth and contrast . You might get hot and have to occasionally fan yourself too.
“Oh I think we know our pieces are going to fit”
Yeah, that did it for me,too.
