As a graduate student of Western (the school she attended), I am so glad she took the time to share her story. As soon as I heard about it, I bought it and looked forward to hearing it and sharing it with others.
As a white man, I have the privilege of avoiding sexism and racism. Its no secret to me that Western is rife with rape culture and toxic masculinity, but my privilege has allowed me to attend here four years without becoming aware of how extreme the racism is.
It really shouldn't come as a surprise, but as someone from the southern states, it is easy to go from someone where racism is so wide spread to here and think things are bit better here. The lack of diversity certainly doesn't help.
I loved this; she is a fantastic a writer. It was equally informative about broad issues as it was personal and moving. I recommend to anyone in campus life, academia, London, Ontario, Canada and anyone interested in getting a glimpse into the campus life for a young black woman.
