Aleron Kong is one of my favorite writers. I think he puts together a very entertaining story with strong characters that leaves you wanting more. However, to me, he missed the mark on this story. Similar to The Land Monsters which was a novella posing as a novel, this story started of well, but had some interesting moments in the middle, but ended weak. Dr. Kong wanted to expand his horizons as a writer, but I did not detect an improvement or a better style of writing in this book. Compared to Predators and prior books, the writing at times seemed childish, without the growth we saw from his first book to his 7th. I would give examples, but do not want to give spoilers.
Honestly, I will continue following The Land series, but this new series I may skip.
I don't know if it will help, but I think Dr. Kong would do well in maybe getting a new group of beta readers, or a professional editor, people who will properly analyze a story.
In the end, I still have hope that Dr. Kong will continue production of books that I want to read over and over, not ones like his last two.
