After keeping it fresh and moving in unexpected directions in the past couple books, this one seems to go back to the comfortable harbor of the first few books. Sometimes that can be okay, but here, after so many books, it feels like a step back.

I felt my suspension of disbelief was a little abused, and Mary Sue McGill was in full effect. The relationships in the series have been great at developing naturally and I like that for once the book didn't lean on the usual crutch of villain's exposition to info dump everything.

I also feel there was a missed opportunity to explore a couple truly alien environments.

All in all, a mediocre entry into the series.

Still keeps me guessing

After 7 books of the same sex-crazed, Earth-loving, lucky sunuvabich, you'd almost expect the author to be out of ideas. And yet...

Sure, I think that there are some tired pieces in the the narrative, like officers who threaten to kill the protagonist, and end up bedding him. Every damn time. But the real story of Earth and the wars, well, I have been consistently pleased at how it develops in the background of the protagonist's own experience.

One last quibble:. is it too much to ask that Claver not show up to move the plot along?

Keeps surprising

Just when I was expecting the series to devolve into some Mary Sue conventions, it picks up the pace. As much as a series about functionally immortal mercenaries can be described as Mary Sue. Larson keeps spinning out more interesting threads, and I think some of the characters have matured, finally. Boyett continues to do a great job with the narration.

I'm amazed

I didn't think that the series would have as much depth as it has shown over 3 books. and with the preview of the 4th book, I see that the plot is widening it's scope. I'm glad my first impression was incorrect.

It's not okay to put lampshades on every trope you use to move the plot along. In my opinion, it undermines my suspension of disbelief. Stop telling me all about how dangerous everything is, and then proceed to somehow have the monkeys triumph at essentially no cost.

Stop recapping something you told us 2 books ago, as well. It sometimes feels like the author is getting paid by the word.

Plus side: The narration is excellent. The voice work and the rolled R's especially were well done.

Spoiler warning from here on****************

Why do the humans trust the beer can at all? It's been shown multiple times that they are being lied to, manipulated and yet they go back like they have battered woman's syndrome. Or Stockholm syndrome. It borders on ridiculous that otherwise believable characters are willing to put themselves in harm's way for such a self serving construct.

I get that we're attached to our favorite characters, and I get that we can't have everyone dying all the time, it's not GoT. Sometimes fees like our protagonists get a little more divine intervention than I would expect in a universe that thinks nothing of smelly monkeys.

that cliffhanger.

Reads like a "Humanity, F*ck Yeah!" story. happy to support the author, unless he keeps pulling the cliffhanger card making me but the next book.

I figured it would be slapdash, turned out to be one of the better ones. once I was listening, it didn't stop having reasons to keep listening. I purchased the next book immediately after this one ended.

Good story, but predictable

Maybe because I've read a lot of fantasy power trips, but it was too predictable
