In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October, 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

Compelling adventure story, albeit slow in places

You will never look at a cold winter night the same again after listening to this book. The author paints a harrowing picture of survival for Shackleton and his men on the Antarctic ice, and one can only marvel that humans were able to survive such an ordeal of unimaginable hardship.
Listened to it with my kids and they did, admittedly, lose interest and bail on it. The middle hours of the book entail long, repetitive descriptions of ice and toil. Stay with it, though, as the epilogue is worth it. I would appreciate knowing what happened after the story in this book ended. I’ll have to look it up now online.

The Girl with All the Gifts
- Auteur(s): M. R. Carey
- Narrateur(s): Finty Williams
- Durée: 13 h et 4 min
- Version intégrale
Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

Good enough to listen twice!

A great listen! My kids and I enjoyed twice (a year between listens). It is a bit violent and there is some swearing, so not for young kids. The narration is perfect — accent, tempo, and inflection.
