Woody Bookman hasn’t spoken a word in his eleven years of life. Not when his father died in a freak accident. Not when his mother, Megan, tells him she loves him. For Megan, keeping her boy safe and happy is what matters. But Woody believes a monstrous evil was behind his father’s death and now threatens him and his mother. And he’s not alone in his thoughts. An ally unknown to him is listening.

Ugh, I can’t stand the flowery prose with the sinister plot, endlessly repeating itself. Good god, is this what best selling authors are churning out? In the dumpster this one goes.

A modern fable on illegal immigrants
Évalué le: 2020-12-17
I liked this book a lot. Written by a Canadian author, I found the perspective similar to how many Canadians view U.S. anti-immigrant policies. It was well told using vivid characters in fictional locations. A modern fable of sorts on current world events - not unlike Pearl Buck’s Good Earth from a century ago.

Still good, but no longer feels fresh. To me the characters are not interesting any more. Much more emphasis is spent on story detail than character development.

A cute story that could have been told in ten pages. The writing is very simple (and annoying). The story is entirely predictable.

Histoire
London, 1853: Young Charles Lenox is called upon by the duke of Dorset, one of England’s most revered noblemen, for help. A painting of the duke’s great-grandfather has been stolen from his private study. But the duke’s concern is not for his ancestor’s portrait; hiding in plain sight nearby is another painting of infinitely greater value, one that holds the key to one of the country’s most famous and best-kept secrets. Dorset believes the thieves took the wrong painting and may return when they realize their error.

Not a favourite, but an interesting listen/read. I liked the sensuality and atmosphere. For me, character development could have been better. Why do I care about these characters? I really don’t.

Histoire
Bram Stoker kept secret a tale even more terrifying than Dracula. It begins among the Carpathian peaks, when an intrepid explorer discovers a mysterious golden box. She brings it back with her to the foggy streets of Victorian London, unaware of its dangerous power…or that an evil beyond imagining has already taken root in the city. Stoker, a successful theater manager but frustrated writer, is drawn into a deadly web spun by the wealthy founders of a mission house for the poor. Far from a safe haven, the mission harbors a dark and terrifying secret.

I liked the story a lot. interesting characters, but not compelling. I don’t know what or who I was rooting for. The excellent narration added an enigmatic feeling not found in the words themselves.

On the day he retires, Inspector Ashwin Chopra inherits two unexpected mysteries. The first is the case of a drowned boy whose suspicious death no one seems to want solved. And the second is a baby elephant. As his search for clues takes him across the teeming city of Mumbai, from its grand high-rises to its sprawling slums and deep into its murky underworld, Chopra begins to suspect that there may be a great deal more to both his last case and his new ward than he thought.

It is no surprise to me that Mr. Pamuk won a Pulitzer Prize for literature. This is the third book of his that I have read and again I am impressed with the quality of his writing, the vivid imagery and the character development. It has been a week since I finished this book and I am still thinking about it.
